SCHOOL EVENTS

STUDENT LEADERSHIP

Recently the focus of our school's leadership team has been to boost our cohort morale and bring more of an importance to the houses that we belong by allowing students to earn house points in this year's House Cup.

In term two we held our first house event on which was a fundraiser event, raising money for a World Vision sponsor child that MESC supports. The main event of this was the dodgeball tournament of students versus teachers, which was open to students of all year levels to come along and earn the chance to collect house points for their respective houses. We also raised money by running a sausage sizzle, a bake sale and sold chocolates. The event was an all round success with students from all different year levels and houses coming together to unite our small community in a day of fun and games.

The success of this day sparked a second house event which was held this term. This event, unlike the first however, was an event that was designed purely to boost school morale and not to raise funds for any particular organisation. This event was the teachers vs students basketball which was held in the gymnasium. For this event, students signed up in teams to enter the tournament with the goal of beating the teachers. Each participant earned points for their house and eventually the students prevailed beating the teachers by quite alot!

Our most recent house event was held on the 25th August and involved a combination of different activities hosted by year 7 and 12 house captains, and the school captains. For this event we had a different room for each activity, including; SingStar, ultimate frisbee, golden child and a trivia event. We had participation from an array of different kids and teachers across all year levels. This was another event that was purely for the good of school morale and team spirit, giving people the chance to bring their house closer to victory in the House Cup.

Days like these are important in uniting Mount Eliza Secondary College as a team of students rather than having students restricted to the confines of their own year level, allowing unexpected friendships and bonds to be made. Hopefully we will have many more of these days to come!

MATHS ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

During late term 2 and all of term 3 a group of year 7 & 8 students have been participating in the Maths Enrichment program run by the Australian Mathematics Trust.  Students have been meeting fortnightly to work through a series of problems that are externally set. They have been working both collaboratively and individually, learning new skills and using their existing maths skills and knowledge in unfamiliar situations. All of the students concerned have participated enthusiastically.  Well done to you all!

A sample problem is included below – have fun!
