Secondary Art Work During ISO

I spy with my Artistic Eye

Students in year 8 and 9 had to exercise their observation skills by finding and describing Art Elements in their first remote learning task ‘Photographing and Drawing Nature’. Initially, students were assigned to go outside and look at nature and capture photos that focus on shape and texture. Thereafter, they studied these photos and described them using specific Art vocabulary. Lastly, students created observational drawings of these photos, which show attention to the outline or shape of the object, or the texture using different tones or marks.

The work that was submitted illustrates the creative talent that is in our Visual Art elective classes! The knowledge and skills students are developing is notable and is evidence of the adaptability of these individuals. I’m super proud!

When I was photographing it was different, because being stuck in certain places made this more challenging, so having to do this in the backyard you had to make sure that you get a different type of texture of different things. The Art vocabulary helped because it made it easier to write about what you saw. You had to clearly state exactly what you saw to describe the shape, texture and colour. Such as a rock with a spiky texture or a rough surface. I enjoyed the freedom of selecting what you wanted to photograph and write about, and then draw to show what you learnt.

I had to focus on the detail of a flower, tree, wood and leaf. The Art vocabulary helped me describe the images because the words described what the plant felt like and looked like. That helped me to think of it in more detail and made it seem more interesting. I learnt that if I use strong vocabulary it will help me to understand the amount of detail in the plant. I enjoyed taking the photos because it made me think outside of the box, and these are the things I would never think to take photos of.

In Art I had to do a remote learning task about Photographing Nature and Art Vocabulary. For the target of the photography task, I had to focus on the object that I was taking pictures of, so that I would know how I wanted my object to be and what angle to show. The Art vocabulary helped me describe the image by showing how big or small and what shape or size it formed, or even where it had a shade or tint. In the process of doing this, I learnt that it took some time and effort to describe, because some had more details and others were nice and simple. I really enjoyed the Photographing Nature task because not only did I learn new things like how to use Art Vocabulary, but I also had a lot of fun.

For the photography task, I had to get close to the leaves, stems and branches to really see the details on the plants, plus also try to make the image as clean as possible. The Art vocabulary helped me to describe the photos that I took better because there were many options to choose from. I learnt many different ways to describe what plants look like and what textures they would be. I enjoyed taking pictures of the nature that was around me and seeing how detailed everything was when it’s up close. I also enjoyed drawing the photos that I took.
