English

Reading and Viewing

This term we will be integrating our inquiry unit ‘ How do We know?’ through our reading content. Explored texts will expose students to information related to Physical Science and Design and Technology.’ Students will focus on the literacy components through the lens of energy sources, electricity and ethical use. Guided reading groups sessions will focus on instructional reading strategies at students’ point of need. Group discussions will be based on asking and responding to  open and closed questions that relate to reading within, beyond and about the texts. Students will be supported to locate and use evidence from the text to support and justify their answers. The reading shall include the building of new vocabulary, concepts and different points of view. The students will also be supported through their individual Reading Conference goals that they set.

 

Writing

The focus for writing this term will be writing to explain, inform and persuade. Writing to explain will allow students to not only interpret and present information but justify the need for the information. Students will gain key understandings in writing to inform using key facts  to support their statements. Students will continue to develop their skills in debating and learn how to rebut an argument, whilst strengthening their persuasive language. These areas of writing will assist students in having the ability to be concise, use facts and figures to support their arguments and highlight the importance of correct use of punctuation. 

 

Speaking and Listening

The aim is to support students in developing their capacity to speak confidently and with expression. They will investigate and compose a spoken text. They will engage and record sustained conversations and discussions using content integrated from the curriculum. Students will be given the opportunity to present through their inquiry unit, Genius Hour investigations, debates and Spirit filled Saint or person presentations.

Maths

Number and Algebra

This area of mathematics provides an opportunity to focus:

  • Fractions, decimals & percentages
  • Financial Maths
  • Four operations

 

Measurement and Geometry

We will focus on extending our understanding of:

  • Location and Transformation
  • Tessellation and Symmetry
  • Time

This term we will use a grid reference system to describe locations. We will also focus on tessellation transformation & Symmetry

 

Statistics and Probability

This area of mathematics provides an opportunity to describe and interpret different data sets in context and in digital media and elsewhere. Students will also be encouraged to transfer relevant factual content to use in their writing.

Inquiry and Religion

This is linked through RE & Wellbeing 

This is paramount as we continue Remote Learning and upon return to onsite learning.

We will continue to work with students on their social and emotional wellbeing. Students are supported to build collaborative and social relationships within a learning environment. Building these relationships allows students to be more confident with their peers both within the classroom and school yard. There will be a focus on building teamwork skills across the level with a variety of activities.  Our Year 5/6 camp will contribute to student social and emotional wellbeing - building resilience, confidence, boost self esteem, being aware of differences and celebrating these. Later in the term Year 5‘s will commence formation and mentoring to support them in the leadership roles that they shall  undertake next year .This term we shall also be supporting our Year 6 students as they prepare to transition into Year 7 in 2022.

 

Social & Emotional Wellbeing

We will continue to work with students on their social and emotional wellbeing. Students are supported to build collaborative and social relationships within a learning environment. Building these relationships allows students to be more confident with their peers both within the classroom and school yard. There will be a focus on building teamwork skills across the level with a variety of activities.  Our Year 5/6 camp will contribute to student social and emotional wellbeing - building resilience, confidence, boost self esteem, being aware of differences and celebrating these. 

Homework

Homework will begin on Monday Week 1 and will include:

  • Reading - at least 4 times a week (documented in school diary).
  • Weekly spelling words.
  • Tasks - related to aspects of classroom learning such as RE, Literacy, Mathematics and Inquiry.
  • Week 1-4 children will have an open learning home task with parents. Year 6 - Confirmation, year 5 - Spirit Filled People. Children will receive a link.

If for some reason all tasks have not been completed we request that parents/carers put a note in their child’s diary.  

 

Winter Gala Day 

Due to covid restrictions at the time the Modiallic District Winter Gala Day unfortunately couldn’t happen. However we have rescheduled this for Friday the 23rd July.
