Year 7

On Thursday 31 January, the Year 7s embarked on a new exciting learning journey: the beginning of secondary school. Students spent time becoming familiar with the core values of the college, expectations and the 2019 level theme and school themes, Belonging and Hospitality.

At the College, young people are encouraged to be in touch with their own emotions, and also to show empathy and to listen. Our school motto is Strength and Kindliness and the girls were encouraged to start showing both of those qualities, introducing themselves to people and asking girls to join their group, right from the beginning and being the friend they would like to have.

Wonder is one of the core values of the College, celebrating all that is good with joy and gratitude. Girls commenced their gratitude jar activity where they will add three gratitude statements each pastoral period. At the end of the year the girls will have the opportunity to read their statements and reflect on all they have been grateful for during the year.

Kilbreda is a school steeped in a rich tradition. The girls were fortunate to hear about Kilbreda’s story, Mentone’s history and the challenges and experiences faced by the Brigidine Sisters. Mr Smith and Sr Lia (both of whom are a key part of Kilbreda’s story),  spoke about the courage shown by Daniel Delany, Mother Mary Burke and the Brigidine Sisters to question their world, to rearrange, find solutions and look at the bigger picture.

On Friday 1 February, students took part in the Selmer Music Survey under the guidance of Mrs Keryn Holden and heard about the wonderful opportunities available in both the Creative Arts and Music departments this year. The girls were encouraged to get involved in the many things offered throughout the year. Debating, library reading clubs, social justice, environment and much more. Mrs Jo Wood also spoke about the variety of sporting activities and competitions available at the College. The Year 7 'Little Sisters' also spent time getting to know their Year 10 'Big Sisters'.

This term’s theme is goal setting and organisation. The students reflected on 2018, discussing their favourite memories, what worked, what they were grateful for, mistakes made and more. They then made suggestions for 2019, places they would like to go, ways they can help others, things they were most looking forward to and new things they may want to try.

We once again thank parents and carers for entrusting us to provide your daughter with quality learning experiences.  We look forward to working alongside you over the next six years to ensure that your daughter continues to develop a passion for learning and those essential social and emotional skills that will allow her to navigate her way through the complexities of life.
