For this first article for 2019, I have invited a couple of our Year 12 students to write about their first Flexi period of the year, which was devoted to our College’s rich history.

On the 5 February, the Year 12 cohort was thrown into the past as we learned about the history of Kilbreda College. Mr Smith commenced the speeches by recounting how Kilbreda was established in 1904. The Brigidine nuns bought the magnificent coffee palace, then known as the Mentone Coffee Palace, after business began to fail, and developed it into the first Catholic girls’ school in the area. Of particular interest was the fact that Kilbreda had boarders and even accepted male students until the 1970s.

Special guest speakers, Sr Reba Woodwiss and Mrs Laura Lunardi, spoke about their experiences as past Kilbreda students and teachers and how their education at Kilbreda helped to form them in their lives and impact the decisions they have made. The presentation included an array of fascinating photographs from their time at Kilbreda. It was particularly interesting to see the earlier variations of our uniform, which were modelled to us by students, Alex Sinclair, Jasmine Geraridis and Abbey Geleit. Sr Reba began school at Kilbreda and completed her primary and secondary education at the college. Much to her surprise, during her final year at school she was awarded the position of College Captain. She later came back to teach here as Sr Goretti.

Mrs Lunardi spoke to us about how she became a teacher at Kilbreda after completing her secondary education at the college. The former pupil spoke of how fortunate we were to be living in a time with such incredible technology, and was awestruck by how many things have changed over the years.
