With each new year all students have many opportunities for growth whether it be through new learning experiences in the classroom or getting involved in one of the many groups or activities offered at the College.  I encourage students to embrace these opportunities, to strive to do your very best in all of your endeavours and to be an active and contributing member of our community.

Each year one of our six core values is embraced as our College theme for the year. Our theme this year is Hospitality – Welcoming all.  Hospitality is the creation of a welcoming, open, inclusive and respectful environment for all individuals, through word and action.

Hospitality is much more than a simple welcome or an offer of food or drink.

Hospitality is an attitude of heart that opens us to others and receives them on their own terms.

Gerald M. Fagin

Hospitality is a feature in both the Old and New Testament.    In the New Testament, there are many examples of the hospitality Jesus extended to others – often the most marginalised and reviled members of the community at the time.  The traditions that make up Kildare Ministries (Brigidine and Presentation) have used hospitality as an essential element of their works.

From the little that is known of the historical Brigid of Kildare, stories abound of her concern for the poor and oppressed, and the welcome offered to friends and strangers alike. Daniel Delany’s life became dedicated to offering an education that welcomed all – all ages, from all spheres of society. Nano Nagle dedicated her life to educate the poor and outcast Catholic children.  She also served the sick, lonely and aged, and the marginalised in society.

Brigid, Daniel and Nano all followed in the footsteps of Jesus, responding to the needs they saw in their community at the time and extending true hospitality to those who needed it most. As members of the Kilbreda community we are called to follow in the footsteps of Jesus and our founders and demonstrate true hospitality in our interactions with others at all times.

There has already been much activity since students returned last week, including a Year 7 Welcome Breakfast for students and their parents/carers,  College photographs, year level events and of course the Year 12 Formal which was celebrated on Friday evening at Brighton International.  The Year 12 students impressed with both their elegant presentation and exemplary behaviour.  Many of these are detailed further in this newsletter.

We look forward to celebrating our 115th anniversary this year and acknowledging the vision and commitment of the Brigidine Sisters who established and have served this school community since it opened in August 1904.

Creator God,

We are all part of the wholeness and goodness of creation, connected to one another.

All around us we can see evidence of our separation from one another.

We are part of systems that benefit some at the expense of others, creating inequality, suffering, and injustice.

Jesus ate and sat with labelled outcasts and he calls us to cross the barriers that society and religions create and never to allow fear to determine relationships.

Help us to cross over the boundaries of our fears and prejudices and bind us into a community of loving care, for the peace and renewal of all human life.

Amen

Best wishes to all for a wonderful year ahead. We look forward to watching our students not only grow but flourish!
