Year 10 Superhack Competition

In December 2018, four Year 10 students headed into The University of Melbourne to compete in the annual Superhack Competition. This competition was aimed at young women and paired the student team with mentors from The University of Melbourne School of Engineering.

On Day 1, teams received some basic training in the Arduino software and the connected robot. They worked through a series of challenges to build their skills. On Day 2, each team was given the challenge to program the robot to rescue a ‘person’ from a burning building.

Well done to these girls for participating in such a challenging competition! Our amazing team included:

  • Isabel Cannon
  • Emily Lalor
  • Angelique Palatino
  • Teagan Stewart

Monash University Women in STEM Entrepreneurship Program (WISE)

We are delighted to announce that we have one team accepted in the Monash University WISE program for 2019. This team from Year 10 will attend a workshop to learn about the ‘Internet of Things’, where devices use the internet to make them smarter and more connected. They will also work together to complete 3-4 hours of pre-work to learn how to use micro:bit coding device. Once they have learnt the coding basics, they attend a one-day workshop and the team will be mentored by a ‘big sister’ University student to turn their coding know-how into a real-world idea!

Congratulations and good luck to the following students:

  • Alexandra Comey
  • Celina Gledhill
  • Skye Zhu-Maguire
  • Isabelle Tricker

During the summer break, Monash University contacted me to see if we would like to enter a second team. If you are in Year 10 and interested, please contact Ms Donoghue to find out more.  More details can be found HERE.

Techbots Club

What do many of these senior students accepted for STEM programs have in common? Well, many of them got their start in our Techbots Club!

Were you the IT leader at your primary school? Do you like to solve problems? Are you interested in robots, programming, green screening, making games, solving problems and other fun technology related activities? If your answer is "Yes", then Techbots could be for you! We meet every Friday at lunchtime in the Maths Resource Room and have some places available for current Year 7s and 8s.

Please contact Ms Donoghue for more details if you would like to find out more. All welcome!
