NAIDOC Week

This week students have been learning all about NAIDOC Week.  Celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.  The week provided students a great opportunity to participate in a range activities and learn about our First Nations' People.

Our Prep Students learnt all about the Aboriginal Flag and why we have an Acknowledgement of Country at assemblies and other school events.

In the Junior School students read the story ‘Finding Our Heart’ - a story about the Uluru Statement for young Australians.  They also learned about why we have an Acknowledgement of Country at assemblies and other school events.

Our Middle School students investigated the history and achievements of First Nations' People through a range of texts, including ‘Finding Our Heart’ and ‘Freedom’ by Archie Roach.  They learnt about what connection to country means and how we can work together to heal country.

The Senior Students had an Indigenous Dance Incursion where they investigated

‘Danzel Baker’, an indigenous singer and songwriter.  The students then created a dance to the song ‘Meditjin’, which translates to Medicine in English.  They also explored a range of texts, including ‘Took the Children Away’ and ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’ to develop their understanding of The Stolen Generation.

Middle School Production

The School is a abuzz with ‘Beetle Mania’ as we count down the days to the Middle School Production…less than a week to go now!  Next Wednesday and Thursday evening our Year 3 and Year 4 students will put on the performance we have all been waiting for at George Wood Theatre (Yarra Valley Grammar).

If you haven’t already purchased tickets there are still some available via this link.
