Year 10 LEAP program: Nazareth Staff car wash

As the Year 10 LEAP students in Mr Kam’s Community Action class, we recently contributed to the community by hosting a Nazareth Staff Car wash. This activity was conducted on the 17th of February and the 3rd of March to help raise funds that will contribute to improving and beautifying the school community.

Before the car wash, we had to organise the dates and a staff sign-up sheet with the costs for the event. We created posters for promotional purposes, then devised two different options for the car wash which included either an exterior wash for $15 or an exterior and interior clean for $20. We learnt about the importance of Occupational Health & Safety on any job site and put together a Job Safety Analysis Table that identified potential hazards, rated risk levels and planned for appropriate control measures to avoid harm to anyone.

All in all, we successfully washed twenty-two cars and raised a total of over $400! We are now looking forward to using the funds to improve the school grounds. Some ideas include gardening, painting, planting new trees and landscaping projects. We have thoroughly enjoyed raising money for the school and working as a team to benefit the school community.

VET Hospitality Top Design Experience 2017

On Friday 17th March, St John’s Graduates Restaurant VET Hopsitality students from Year 1, 2 & 3 and other participating schools that offer hospitality catered for the Function - Top Design 2017 at Melbourne Museum. On the day of the function we all met up at Graduates Restaurant at 8.30am. I was part of the Front of House crew where we had 8 staff members, 3 of whom were first year Hospitality students.

During service we had to set up a bar with glasses and drinks. This was operated by Back of House students.

At the start of the day, Front of House helped to set up for a Wedding Reception. Until 4pm, we helped out Back of House with the staff dinner and other housekeeping matters. At 4.15pm we set up tables and arranged food platters around the serving areas. At 4.30pm we changed into our uniforms and began serving drinks and finger food. Service lasted for about 2 hours with over 600 guests catered for. At the conclusion of the event, it took an hour and a half to clean up. Then we had the luxury of having dinner together. The night ended with tired students arriving back at Graduates at 9.50pm.

I am grateful for this second opportunity as I have previously catered for this event with Graduates and hope to do it again next year.

Kitchen Garden

One of  Year 11 Numeracy's projects

The Year 11 Numeracy class of 2017 planted herbs and vegetable seeds in the new Kitchen Garden outside the Joseph's Centre on Thursday the 9th of March.

It was a good experience to learn new skills. Some of us have never done any planting before. Amazingly we all enjoyed it and had a great time as teenagers should.

We were split into groups of 2 or 3 and were given a choice of what we wanted to plant. We have researched what will grow in Autumn and different garden designs to make sure that whole garden looks beautiful.

My group chose to start a herb garden. We were given lots of herbs such as basil, celery, shallots and thyme. Daniel even brought parsley seeds from home! The plants have grown since we planted them two weeks ago. We are all very pleased with the work we have done, since all seedlings and seeds are doing extremely well, especially considering they had lasted through a stinking hot weather. I am certain that our gardens will grow beautifully and fully mature.

The Applied Learning class and I really appreciate Mrs Murphy for giving us the opportunity to learn such a great life skill.

Balloon Football Founders visit Nazareth

It was great to have Cam West and Adam Barry visit the college this week. Along with the Year 12 VCAL students, they explained the important role our VCAL students play in supporting SCOPE’s Southern Balloon Football League. This year, the students’ role has further extended to include preparing, mentoring, inducting and debriefing visiting secondary school students who will join in the game for a one off experience of working alongside people with disabilities. This is part of SCOPE’s Education Unit on Disability Awareness, which is aimed at adolescents. Special thanks to the Year 12s for so passionately presenting their views on this wonderful community partnership.
