SWIMMING CARNIVAL - WEDNESDAY 28 FEBRUARY

The annual McKinnon Swimming Carnival is fast approaching this term. The carnival will be held at Caulfield/Carnegie pool, once again, which is located on Moira ave in Caulfield. Parents are reminded that students will be expected to meet at the pool on Wednesday 28 February by 8:45am for roll call. Students will be dismissed from the venue at 2:45pm

The theme for this year’s carnival is "House Op Shop" and we encourage all students to shop at the local op shops and dress in their House colours. Hopefully we see some funky outfits and the day promises to be an excellent day for students to participate in a range of activities including swimming, beach volleyball, water polo and table tennis.

Please note that attendance is compulsory.

SENIOR GIRLS CRICKET

The Senior Girls Cricket team started their 2018 campaign in great fashion last Tuesday against Parkdale. Losing the toss, McKinnon set a target of 93 for Parkdale to win. Lilly Felder started finely with the bat, but was unfortunately run out. Jemma Owen and Emma Hattingh also batted well and good starts from Emily Cartledge and Tess McCartney helped to steer the girls to a strong position.

The McKinnon girls were all fantastic in the field. There was enthusiasm, great backing up and excellent camaraderie. Brilliant catching from Jemma and beautiful run outs from Lilly were highlights. But the bowling accuracy of Lara Van Zyl gave her figures of 3/2 from two overs which hopefully transpires into many more wickets from her this season!

The girls were a delight to coach and I look forward to the next game to come on Tuesday 27 February. Good luck girls!

INTERMEDIATE GIRLS CRICKET

The Intermediate Girls Cricket team took on Brighton Secondary College in a winner take all T20 match for the Kingston Division Championship. Newly appointed captain, Emma Langley, won the toss and sent Brighton in to bat on what appeared to be a menacing wicket for batsmen at McKinnon Reserve.

Tayla Fischer was thrown the new ball and her pace was too much to handle, ripping through Brighton’s top order and providing the perfect start for McKinnon. Victorian representative, Kampi Nainhabo chimed in with 3 wickets from her 4 overs in what was a classy display of swing bowling, leaving the visitors all out for a moderate total of 75.

An early partnership of 30 between Coco Parker and May Landau gave McKinnon a steady start in the run chase, before a mix up resulted in Parker being run out from a nice piece of Brighton fielding. This brought Emma Langley to the crease who demonstrated a fine innings of explosive hitting, sending one Brighton bowler over the mid-wicket fence for a maximum.

The McKinnon batting lineup proved too strong in the end with Brighton’s total being chased down within 18 overs. The game was played in great spirit and the McKinnon girls look forward to the next round later this year.

SENIOR BOYS CRICKET

If the thought of Big Bash cricket or AFLX upsets the traditionalist within you, then consider yourself lucky you avoid the annual Really Big Bash known as the Senior Boys Cricket day.

A Round Robin of 8-over matches is played to somehow find the best cricketing school in the Kingston Division.

The day of course boasts many highlights with the bat and ball, some creative running between the wickets, and at times some outstanding fielding efforts.

The 8-over format of the day does however lend itself to a degree of luck and good fortune, and often the best side doesn’t come out on top. Alas, we didn’t win on this day, we were defeated on a percentage countback by Bentleigh. But our boys played all day with some tremendous spirit, enthusiasm and pride, and for that it was a pleasure to be involved.

Lachie Arneil, James French and Cal Drenth provided some bashing entertainment with the bat, whilst Timmy Mullane, Myles Sellenger and Josh Dunstan provided the poise and polish all day.

We will be back next year, and hopefully a few more balls bounce our way.
