Robogals Excursion

On Wednesday 26 February five Year 7 students travelled into the city to a Melbourne University facility to attend a Robogals  workshop.  Robogals is a global student run organisation that aims to increase female participation in Science, Technology and Engineering through fun and educational initiatives. The primary activity  was running Lego robotics workshops in which the students were teamed with people from other schools to programme the robots to undertake a number of tasks and challenges.

The Nazareth students that participated in the workshop were:

Annabelle Cameron

Victoria Kammel

Isabella White

Emmanuel Showa

  • Shanaye Whiteside

An insight into the day has been provided by some of our students who attended the day:

Robogals was an amazing experience and I recommend it to everyone.  You get to learn and try new things, such as learning how to program a EV3 robot using a computer.  You can teach it how to create shapes on the floor and you're separated into a group of 3 and you get to meet people from different schools and you have to program your EV3 to complete challenges to collect stars! It was lots of fun and I'm so glad I decided to go.

Victoria Kammel

I was excited that I was chosen to represent Nazareth College at Robogals this year. Our Nazareth group participated in lots of activities and we learnt  how to work as a great team. I programmed robots to completing challenges that can help us around the world. I also worked in a small group with 2 other girls from different schools. We named our robot Bobby Jr. We made Bobby Jr navigate around a box and through an Obstacle course. I had a fun and educational day at Robogals

Isabella White.

I really enjoyed going to the Robogals event.  It was so much fun to play around with different codes and learn about what the codes would do. I really liked the challenges they gave us like to make our robot make a star shape or guide it through a course. I also liked talking to other girls who had the same interests as I did.

Annabelle Cameron

Well done to on your participation and efforts during the day.

Year 11 Psychology Excursion

On Monday 17 February, the Unit 1 and 2 Psychology students went into the city to visit The Mind Exhibition at Melbourne Museum. The students enjoyed applying their understanding of the brain and nervous system during the visit, in particular noticing the neural network wall of lights as they walked into the room.

Other highlights included trying out the Dream Couches to see what it might feel like to be in an altered state of consciousness, and seeing how small or gigantic people can appear in the Ames Room optical illusion. Overall, it was a valuable experience, with many students reporting that they would like to return to the museum soon.

Proposed Italy Study Tour 2020

Following the success of the Japan Study Tour in 2019, the College is excited to propose a Study Tour to Italy in 2020. The information session, held at the conclusion of Term 4 last year, was very well received by parents, and we have a growing interest in the tour through the online form and phone calls.

For those of you unable to attend the information session last year or who have since considered this wonderful opportunity for your child, the Study Tour is proposed to depart on November 23 and return on December 9, 2020. Please see the attached itinerary for further details. Please note that this is a proposed itinerary at this stage and an estimated price based on the itinerary as it stands, and the cost will not be expected to be any higher. The cost includes everything – flights, accommodation, meals, tours and transport. Furthermore, we are going to work with the company and also with the College on ways in which the cost can be mitigated.

At this stage, may we please ask that two forms (attached) are completed with no obligation to participate. The first is a student application form and the second is a parent feedback form, so that we can be better informed before proceeding to deposits and finalising definite numbers. Forms can be submitted to the ‘Italy Study Tour 2020’ pigeon hole in Student Services by Tuesday 10 March.

Vinnies Bushfire Appeal

Late last year marked a devastating start to Australia’s bushfire season. Fires spread rapidly across all states and quickly became the most devastating on record, destroying approximately 3,000 homes, causing the death of at least 34 people, and killing over 1 billion animals.

Being a school community, we felt that the best way that we could do ‘our bit’ to help support the people affected by the fires was to raise money. On Tuesday 24 February, the Vinnies team organised and ran a Casual Dress Day together with a Sausage Sizzle to raise much needed funds for the people affected by the fires. The day was a massive success due to the generosity of the Nazarene community, whereby we raised $2,321.00!  We are hoping to round this up to $2,500.00 after the Carnival.

Obviously, this would not have been possible without the great work of many people, so a big thank you goes to Ronan Lobo (Knox House Leader) for being the driver of this appeal, who worked hard to ensure the day was well promoted and organised.

We also want to thank the wonderful people who took the time support the appeal. Particular thanks go to Mr Paull Ziegeler, Sara K and Aiden G, who gave up their time to manage the BBQ on the day, and to all the Vinnies members who helped to advertise, cook, serve and clean up.

And of course, this would not have been possible without the generosity of everyone who supported us by donating. We want to thank all the students, parents and staff for embracing our cause. Your kindness is not only greatly appreciated by us, but by all those who have been affected by the fires, many who will be better off because of your donations.

2020 SIS Performing Arts (The Big Night) Preparations

SIS Performing Arts is an opportunity for students to work with other schools to put on a concert. Students from different schools all over the region come together with shared talents in singing, dancing and playing instruments. All schools gather together to rehearse for three days then perform on the last. The atmosphere of these rehearsals is one which you cannot find anywhere else as students are able to socialise with people of similar interests and work with them to create something magical. It is a performance opportunity for students where they can grow their skills in music and learn to perform in a group environment. Students make new friends and memories that they never forget.

Nazareth Performing Arts students have participated in this collaboration for a few years and this year it will be held at the Drum Theatre on Tuesday 24 March.

Year 9 Camp

From Wednesday to Friday last week, the Year 9s went to Anglesea for camp. We stayed at the Eumeralla Scout Camp, and while it was no 5 star hotel, we still managed to get a few hours of sleep! At camp many of us experienced things we have never done before. For some it might have been putting up a tent, surfing, kayaking or even just being away from home.

It was great fun spending time with peers and experiencing new things with them. It was a great learning experience, and a great getaway from the stresses of school. To the Year 7s and Year 8s who will participate in Year 9 camp in the future, know that it is truly a wonderful experience to get to know your year level, make new friendships, and adapt to new environments.

‘Development where it matters most’

We have now finished the first two weeks of our program and the attendance has been more than we expected and this has led us to make some changes to the program.

As we have 34 students attending Basketball, with an equal amount of boys and girls, we have decided to run sessions as follows:

Wednesday - Year 7 and 8 Boys Basketball:   7.45 – 9.00 am

Friday - Year 7 and 8 Girls Basketball:               7.45 – 9.00  am

This decision allows for all students to participate, develops a stronger girls and boys team, ensure better access to equipment and allows the coach to run more specific sessions.

A similar number of students have also been attending Soccer and after four sessions 22 players have been selected. For those who have missed out, I encourage you to apply next year, select Soccer Ed as a Year 9 subject and join your local club if you have not done so already.

The first games for both sports will be against Timbarra College in the first week of Term 2.

Local Clubs

Soccer and Basketball clubs will soon be commencing their training for the season ahead and if you have not already done so I recommend that you contact clubs in your area as they always welcome new members.

Clubs include:

Lyndale United

Brandon Park

South East United

Keysborough SC

Ultra Football

Our partnership with Ultra Football has been a significant one for both the school and students and they will continue to offer us deals unique to Nazareth as well as the 10% off all purchases. Please use the link to register and join the Nazareth College Club Zone.

Year 12 PE Surf Excursion

On Thursday 27 February the Year 12 Physical Education class ventured off to Phillip Island to test their surfing skills at the famous Smith’s Beach. The conditions were perfect, with a big swell for our students to try and master, and master they did. All students were successful in standing up on their boards and riding the waves into the shore. The elation and joy on their faces was great to see and all students had a great day. We might have witnessed the next generation of Australian Surfers; watch out Mick Fanning and Stephanie Gilmore, Nazareth students are coming for you.

The Year 12 PE class went to Phillip Island for a surfing excursion when we were able to put our classroom theory of biomechanics into practice. It was a fun experience to have with a small class allowing us all to become closer by learning our course work. Being able to put our theory learning into practice allows us to retain the content-heavy material more easily by having visual references and experiences in our brain. All in all, it was a great experience that provided us with a lot of enjoyment and information relevant to future theory for our class.
