The following week Mrs Ward gave a presentation to the group on Rear Window – Year 12 English film. The Captains had their first meeting. 2019 Captain Profiles

Hi everyone, I’m Caitlin and I am privileged to be your College Captain for 2019! Just a little bit about me, I’m currently in Year 12, studying English, Psychology, Business and both Further and Maths Methods, having completed 3/4 Legal Studies this year. Outside of my school life, I have a real interest in cooking and travelling, going on school camps such as the Japan trip, Central Australia, and Yarrabah. These trips not only helped me to connect with other teachers and students in the school, but also provided me with an opportunity to gain my own sense of independence and awareness of my ability to lead and work in a team with various people efficiently and effectively. After completing Year 12, my goal is to attend university to become a qualified primary and secondary school teacher as I have a strong interest in helping and guiding others! Previously, I have been involved in the SRC, our McClelland College open days and various leadership conferences to shape me to become the leader that I will be this year! This coming year, as College Captain I really want to ensure that all students have access to, and take advantage of all opportunities available to them, and continue to promote and maintain a positive school environment in line with our school values, for those enrolled already, and for those who will one day be enrolled at McClelland College. And last of all, feel free to come and chat to me at any time with any concerns or ideas that you have to better our school, and I look forward to working with and leading you all in 2019!

Hello! My name is Sarah Garnier and I am excited to say I am one of the College Captains for 2019. When I first came to McClelland, I remember looking up to the College captains at the time and thinking, ‘I’m going to do that’. Five years later and here I am.

During my five years at the school already I have been apart of almost every department you can think of, experiencing so many new things and enhancing so many crucial skills through the various workshops and programs that are available to our students.  The Captain team and I have already done so much in our few last weeks of school and we can’t wait to leave our mark on the college. Our main focus for 2019 is implementing a school wide positive behaviour support. We have already started implementing a few schemes in classes that focuses on the positives of the students allowing for the reduction of problematic behaviour, the increase in performance and improvement of school culture.

2019 Co-Captain Profiles

Hi everyone! I'm Caitlyn Taylor, I'll be in Year 12 next year and I'm one of the co-captains of the College for 2019. I'm thrilled to have been selected to take on a captain position, and I'm even more thrilled that I get to work with Caitlin, Sarah and DJ. Us four captains traveled to Japan together with the College so I'm really excited for what we get up to! In 2019, I'll be studying English, P.E., Health and Human Development, Psychology and Japanese, and I wish to work in Health and Nutrition Promotion after year 12.

I was a year 11 representative on the SRC this year, and after participating in the Teach the Teacher program with the SRC, I'm really looking forward to what we accomplish throughout next year.

As Co-Captain, I would love to work on improving the bin system at the school to reduce the amount of litter there is, and encourage students to start doing the same within the community. We don't realise just how much landfill we produce, so we should contribute towards making the school cleaner and more environmentally friendly.

I'm so thankful to have been given this opportunity, I can't wait to get started!

Hello Community of McClelland College. I am David (DJ) McFarlane, one of college co-captains at McClelland for 2019.

I have been on the McClelland SRC or SLC (depending on which year it was) every year since Year 7. I am now a Year 11 VCE student and am doing chemistry, physics, systems engineering, math (methods), math (general) and English. Outside of school, I am a venturer in the Bunarong Venturer Unit at Ballam Park Scouts and a blue belt at GKR Karate.

Next year I would like to see more student ideas being presented to the SRC as it exists to represent our students’ voice and am looking forward to seeing the new school-wide positive behaviours policy in action. I would really like to see these things make the school a better place for all students especially our new policy which acknowledges the students doing the right things and rewarding them instead of just pointing out those students doing the wrong thing.

Haileybury Youth Leadership Conference

On the 23rd of November, the 4 new captains, Sarah Garnier, DJ McFarlane, Caitlyn Taylor and myself set off on our first official activity as leaders for 2019! We were up bright and early, catching the train as a group to the Haileybury city campus where we participated in their newly introduced youth leadership conference alongside various other schools.

After a warm welcome from the Senior Vice Principal of Haileybury, we got stuck into our first workshop with Ben Sze, the co-founder and managing director of Edrolo. Being a leader himself in the business world, Ben had crucially helpful information regarding not only leadership itself, but more specifically, time management, the formulation of ideas, and how to prioritise those ideas in terms of importance.

Following Bens’ workshops, Alisa Wallace, a strong female solicitor, talked to us about teamwork, which was of course relevant to us as the captain team, but also additionally as a part of the SRC which strives to continuously improve the school.

Lastly, we participated in a workshop with Sahil Shekhar, whom we were quite interested in seeing as he graduated from the prestigious Harvard University! Sahil’s workshop was focused on communication to a larger group, in our case this school, and how to both develop and express our ideas as leaders.

Overall, the whole day, and experience itself, was extremely valuable to all 4 of us. Being able to talk to the various other schools allowed us to bounce ideas off of each other, in order to help us be the best leaders that we can be for 2019!

2019 School Captains Forum

On Tuesday evening, as a part of our roles as College Captains, Sarah, Caitlin, DJ and I were invited to a 2019 School Captains Forum with the Youth Mayor of Frankston, Gerard Felipe, along with leaders from John Paul College, Frankston High School and Mount Erin Secondary College. It was an ‘informal induction’ as Gerard put it, but it was a lovely opportunity to be able to meet with other School Leaders. We will be working together to provide feedback on what’s working or not working for our schools, and what we can do to within the wider community. Gerard informed us that we will be having meetings once a month to touch base and work on ideas we might have. We discussed issues we noticed in our local area such as homelessness, the lack of rubbish bins along the foreshores, and how the renovated Frankston Station is a great canvas for graffiti. With these issues, we discussed possible solutions, some of which we’re really keen to begin.

The fact that we will be working with like-minded people is exciting, as all of us were able to bounce off of each others’ ideas and opinions to join in the one big conversation.
