Nice to know

Congratulations Year 12 Theatre Studies

Well done to the Year 12 Theatre Studies class on their very professional performance of "The Tell Tale Heart' on Saturday the 9th of April.

Mr Gin returns to our screens

Watch Mr Gin on TV (Again!)

According to the Lunar Calendar, this is the Year of the Tiger, but for Mr Gin, it may as well be the Year of the Quiz Show. Three quiz show appearances in less than 8 months is quite a rare accomplishment.

So how will Mr Gin fare in his 4th quiz show battle? Will there be cartoon impersonations or perhaps a sudden outburst of song? Does he wear his lucky striped jumper? To find out, be watching Mastermind Australia, SBS HD, Monday, May 9 @ 6.00 pm sharp.

Spoiler Alert: Mr Gin has been overheard saying:

1. “This is my best quiz show result to date!”

2. “I guarantee that you’ll feel the Earth move under your feet”

Mr Gin writes “I really appreciated the supportive comments from the wider SHSC community following my first-round departure from the ABC Hard Quiz episode in early March. By participating in public events such as quiz shows, my wish is to promote to our student body, risk-taking, resilience and life-long learning. I hope that you will be encouraged by my efforts this time around!

Doing my best is my personal goal; winning is just a bonus. For all of us, Daring To Be Excellent is what counts!”

Congratulations Marcus Turco of 8L

Marcus was selected to represent Victoria in the National Indigenous Basketball Australia tournament, and his state team was placed third!  Well done Marcus we are very proud of you.

The 5 day week on the Gold Coast, was packed with Basketball training, games and most importantly cultural & inspirational guest speakers with a big message for everyone to “Dream Big” and “Own Your Story”.  For those who are interested, many of the games were recorded and live streamed and can be re-watched via the Facebook page – Indigenous Basketball Australia.

Congratulations Lilly Vasilic

After the past few years of lockdowns and cancelled theatre performances, the Melbourne Theatre Company has resurrected their Youth Ambassador program. This is a select entry program for Yr 11 students that have a passion for theatre and the MTC Ambassadors  take a leadership role which has two functions; to act as youth representatives within the Company, and to act as advocates for MTC within their school and social communities. This year, St Helena Secondary College is proud to announce that Lilly Vasilic has been hand selected to represent SHSC and to bring that knowledge to the SHSC Performing Arts community. During the school holidays, Lilly attended the first session where they met MTC staff and artists and participated in an exclusive Q&A. Well done Lilly!

1 in 1000 year event

I received this email from alumni parent and staff member Cecily Vlastuin with some fantastic vision of a very rare planetary alignment taken here on school grounds.  Cecily was able to fill me in on the achievements of alumni students Rachel, Nick and Tim Vlastuin.  It's always great to hear what our ex students are up to.  Rachel qualified as a physiotherapist and is working with the TAC, Tim is living in Canberra with his wife and children, and Nick is of course playing AFL football.

"No doubt you heard about the planetary alignment that’s occurred this past week?  Last occurred 947 A.D., and next one due in 1000 yrs time!

Hence I was keen not to miss the event – 4 planets lining up across the early morning sky, with the moon putting in a show as well. For Melbourne to have such a clear sky at that time was MOST unusual!

As I usually do for celestial events, I headed to SHSC.  At 5am Tuesday morning the attached photos are what I saw…

There’s 2 photos  looking down the driveway, but the best view was from the sports oval where there’s less light interference (tho the photo is darker).

This was 7’s schematic of what to expect.
