Year 9 &10 Ceramics

BY JUDY WOOD (HEAD OF ART)

The hum of the pottery wheels, squeals of delight, the kiln door is opened after a glaze firing and the earthy smell of clay, this is 9/10 Ceramics.

Given that ceramics is so popular with students, this year we have 2 courses running: an advanced course, for those students who have chosen this elective for a second time, and our regular course for students who are experiencing this elective for the first time.

Students participating in the regular course have made leaf dishes decorated with pooling glaze, a bowl decorated using the tissue transfer technique and a plate decorated using the Sgraffito technique, where students paint their plate with black underglaze and scratch in their design to reveal the white clay underneath.

Students who are taking the advanced course are making nature inspired wall hangings. They have made organic shaped forms and have just begun experimentation with glazes, oxides and melting marbles. Students look forward to revealing these creations in the coming weeks.

Last but not least, the pottery wheels are a great favourite.  Messy and enormously fun! While this skill requires a good deal of practice, students never cease to amaze with their impressive results.
