YEAR 7 OES OVERNIGHT CAMP

BY FRANCIS BEST (YEAR 7 OES TEACHER)

On Thursday March 24, the final bell rang and students started to head home, except for the brave Year 7 Outdoor Education students! They were about to begin camping overnight on the oval, cooking their meals over trangias and preparing for a big hike the next day. Many of these students had never camped before but showed excellent adaptability and teamwork.

After a peaceful, silent, no-talking-or-giggling-in-the-tents-at-all night, the students woke up and prepared for a hike through Sherbrooke Forest. Led by skilled teachers and the encouragement of Easter Eggs, the students completed their trek in record time, making great memories along the way.

PLANTING FOR GENERATIONS

BY ANDREW LOCKREY (YEAR 8 TEACHER)

On Monday, I took my class 8AL, on a short walk over to the block next to school. There we met Year 3 students and the grounds crew who had set up a great system for getting lots and lots of plants into the side of the block.

There were tubs of gardening gloves, piles of good soil, lots and lots of wooden stakes and many, many plants to be planted. The system was clearly a well oiled machine that has been started up many times in the history of BHCS. The Year 8's and the Year 3's jumped into it quickly after a brief demonstration by Gerry.  During a conversation with a Year 8 student who asked "why are we doing all this planting?" I couldn't help but think of a quote I'd heard. "The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit."

I love that BHCS has a long history of doing things for future generations of students, and I hope that current students will gain much joy from watching these plants, which are visible from the road into school, grow.
