Reuben Alonso: Victorian State Cross Country, Yarra Glen

On Thursday 14th July School Captain, Reuben Alonso competed at the Victorian State Cross Country Championships at Yarra Valley Race Course.  It was a very tricky 3km course including a horse racing track (can be quite bumpy and choppy at times), many large, muddy puddles, a lot of mud and a huge hill!

The field was very close together in finishing (only three minutes separated first and last place), and Reuben finished 63rd of 98 in the State of Victoria! Congratulations Reuben – this is such a fantastic effort and experience!

AND…..

Reuben Alonso: U12 Victorian Cricket Team Trials

Last term Reuben also made the short list for trials in Under 12 Victorian Cricket Team!  Here is a short interview of Reuben’s experiences and thoughts on his recent success in making it so far in the selections for the Victorian Team:

What Team were you selected to try out in?

“I made the short list for the Victorian U12 Cricket Team.  Just before holidays, there were some extra training and try outs to finalise the final team.  I was unsuccessful, but boy I was close!”

What did you have to do on the days of your trial? How were you feeling?

“On our initial try out day, we were split into three groups: fielding, batting and bowling. You work through each skill for about 45 minutes each, and the selectors can see who would fit best into the team. I felt great going into the selections after trying out last year, I was more confident because I knew what to do and what was expected”.

You tried out for the same team last year - How do you think you have changed in a year and what have you done to make that change?

“Since last year I have continued training with my team, especially with my bowling.  My bowling has improved, although I am better as a batsman”.

What sort of advice would you give someone who wanted to make the same team as you, or a similar team in their chosen sport?

“If you want to make a big team or in fact want to be good at anything you are passionate about, keep giving your best effort everyday and take every opportunity presented to you – it might be the day to have that chance to go further!”

Congratulations Rueben!  We are very proud of your sporting endeavors, and how you present yourself as a sportsman and positive role model to everyone at St Joseph the Worker!  Keep up the fantastic work!
