English

Reading and Viewing

This term we will continue with our weekly reading focus. In reading groups, the students will use Fountas and Pinnell leveled texts to work on comprehension strategies about, within and beyond the text. 

 

Writing

This term students will focus on writing to explain/inform and persuade, investigating persuasion through advertising.  For each text type we will look at the different structures and language features specific to text type. 

We will continue with our weekly spelling focus and different areas of grammar:- sentences including simple and compound, nouns, adjectives, nouns acting as adjectives, adverbs, prepositions. Then we will move onto aspects of figurative language:- similes, metaphors and alliteration.

 

Speaking and Listening

The students will be given opportunities to listen and contribute to conversations and discussions, to share information and ideas. In collaborative groups students will also plan and deliver short presentations on given topics.  Students will be required to be  active listeners and respectful speakers when working in small groups.

Maths

Number and Algebra

This term we will revisit  multiplication and division. We will develop efficient mental and written strategies and use appropriate digital technologies for multiplication and division where there is a remainder.  We  will also work with the processes in Money and Financial Matters calculating transactions involving money. We will revise and extend our understanding of Fractions and Decimals. 

 

Measurement and Geometry

In this unit students investigate the properties of Three Dimensional Objects. They will explore the axis of symmetry and rotational symmetry of shapes. They will also investigate the Transformation of Shapes: flip, slide and turn (reflect, translate, rotate) Finishing the unit the students will investigate tessellation of shapes.

Location: The students will look at the different compass directions and label different parts of the room noting direction. They will work with coordinates to write directions for different paths and identify landmarks by following coordinates

Inquiry - Rules and Laws

In this unit the students explore the rules and laws, and how they affect us. They will  investigate the  difference between rules and laws. They will identify the different rules in different settings and laws that apply to all of us. They will investigate what would happen if we had no rules or laws and how some rules protect the rights of individuals. Students compare and explore the Australian law system and Indigenous Lore. They are introduced to the three levels of government, and learn more about the local government including laws and community groups. Students will identify who has the authority to make rules and laws and investigate and explain the cultural norms behind some rule making, such as removing shoes before entering places of cultural significance.`

Religion

During Term 3 the Year 3/4 students will explore the Religious Education Content Area of Morality and Justice.  Students will begin with a focus on friendships, leading into the Ten Commandments.  They will also explore Indigenous Lore and Lore making comparisons to the Ten Commandments. Using Scripture, there will also be a focus on the commandment to love one another. Students will explore the concept of the human person and their personal responsibility in maintaining right relationships and reflect on choices in light of Jesus' commandment to love one another.

Social & Emotional Wellbeing

The Wellbeing focus for this term is POSITIVE COPING. This unit will focus on personal strategies for children to develop to cope in situations where they might feel anxious.

Students will Investigate how emotional responses vary in depth and strength. They will identify and describe strategies to manage and moderate emotions in a range of familiar and unfamiliar situations. Students will identify a range of productive coping strategies for use in different situations. Students will learn and practice self-calming techniques.
