Year 5 News

Passing the halfway point of the term, the Year 5's have not slowed down one bit! With NAPLAN now behind us, we look forward to the final weeks of Term 2.

Literacy

The Year 5 students have completed their Reading and Viewing Learning Task with a focus on figurative language. Over the past few weeks, we have analysed and experimented with metaphors, similes and personification. Tying in with our Unit of Inquiry and utilising their new acquired knowledge, the classes delved into analysing the books, 'Flood' and 'Fire', by Jackie French.

We discussed the relevancy of the stories with the most recent disaster to hit the northern parts of the country, with many students making connections with these events to their own lived experiences.

Students demonstrated their knowledge of figurative language by writing their own short paragraphs describing a natural disaster. Finally, for narrative writing the students were provided with a picture prompt of a devastating crack in the ground and tasked with creating a short story revolving around "The Split".

 Inquiry

With exhibition right around the corner, the students have been heavily focussed on their summative project about the education and responses around natural disasters.

Last week, they commenced combining all their research into two or more forms of presentation, with some students taking their projects to the next degree, with models, videos, and computer games. This has been an exciting and action-packed unit and we are enjoying all the creativity and unique ideas that students have generated. We look forward to sharing all the hard work and wonderful outcomes in our next newsletter.

Homework

After a well-deserved break from homework, the Year 5 students will once again be bringing home their SMART Spelling words, along with the expectation of reading for a minimum of 15 minutes over a least 3 days, as well as a My Numeracy maths activity.

This week we have also asked the students, if possible, to create any extra supporting material for their Inquiry Exhibition. We appreciate all the ongoing support from families regarding homework.

Well Done Year 5

Once again, the Year 5 teachers are extremely grateful for the positive attitudes and resilience the students have shown over the past couple of weeks. Nearly there!

Please enjoy some examples from our figurative language tasks.

The monster of fire consumed everything but it wanted more. The air was thick and it hurt to breathe. The more the fire consumed, the more it became like a starving bear. Not caring what it harmed, as long as it was being fed. Flames licked the house. The residents standing and watching as their house reduced, eaten by the monster that was the fire!

Stella

Houses burned down like paper. The fire spread quickly, dancing and leaping through the streets. A big wall of heat, blazing through the buildings, leaving nothing in its path of destruction behind. A world of black and red was here.

Freddie

The ferocious flames engulfed the house. The flames were strong red poppies. The heat overtaking the house like an atomic bomb. The house was crying, it was distraught with all the memories made in the house gone.

Ollie

You could hear the crackle, it was wood burning like popcorn being made. The hose started letting water out like it was running a marathon. It gushed. The fire slowly started to go out until a tiny flame was left like an ant.

Kian

The fire was roaring like a lion, The fire fighters ran like lightening up to the red hot disaster.

Amber

The fire screamed at us to get out the way!

Makarlie

The fire was eating my house alive!

Annabelle

The fire fighters were struggling to hold the fire back while it was swallowing everything it touched.

Ella

I see a phoenix of blazing fire by a campsite, fire is dancing and people are laughing.

Sam

The blaze ripped through the houses like scissors and startled the people around. The communities hearts were all broken. The trees were crying helplessly.

Toby

The fire was like an angry cloud, destroying everything in its way. The fire is a burning bright sun invading people’s property. This fire sprinted everywhere it could.
