Year 3 News

Year 3

It’s been another busy couple of weeks for Year 3 with NAPLAN catch ups for people who were away, working on our multiplication skills and telling time for Maths and learning many new things based around our Unit of Inquiry “Cultures Change Over Time”. We made a power point about a Notable Indigenous Australian and presented it to the class.

Here are a few highlights, written by our students

Incursion- Ian Hunter, Indigenous Elder

On Monday 23 May the Year 3’s had an incursion with Ian Hunter. He told us about his Indigenous background and culture. He explained how didgeridoos are made with termites eating out the middle of a small tree and he showed us how to play the didgeridoo.

Ian told us some interesting stories and talked about the indigenous language and the names of things and places. We learnt that the word Moomba (the festival we have in Melbourne) really means BUTT! He also made a tiny boomerang out of cardboard that worked!

Respectful Relationships Wellbeing Week

On Wednesday 25 May we celebrated Well Being Week with a Cultural Diversity Day. We dressed up in clothes that represented our background.

We did some fun activities for Respectful Relationships. We worked in pairs to keep a balloon up off the ground as long as we could while holding hands, then we discussed what we needed to do this successfully. We came up with communicate (talk, listen), cooperate, work together, plan, stay calm, concentrate.

Then as a whole group we had to make a tight circle with everyone facing clockwise and slowly sit so that everyone was sitting on the knees of the person behind them. We all had to work together and WE DID IT!

Science – Rock Hardness Test

The rock hardness test was really accurate. We had to rotate around the room and test the hardness of the rocks by scratching them against each other. If one rock made a line on the other rock it was harder. The hardest of the rocks was a diamond. It turns out that a diamond is harder than concrete.

Oral Presentation about a Notable Indigenous Australian

I really liked this task. We got to learn a lot about Notable Indigenous people. I chose Adam Goodes. I found out a lot about him by doing research. Then we had to create the power point. I used pictures and transitions to add to the information about Adam Goodes.

Then I got to show it to all 3D and 3C. It is a bit scary getting up to talk but fun too. I learned about other important Indigenous people like Cathy Freeman and Ash Barty from other people.
