Maths

As well as completing our mid-year Math assessments over the past fortnight, The Year One students have been exploring using units of measurement and in particular reading analogue and digital clocks to measure time to the hour and half-hour. 

The students have been enjoying interactive lessons, including Pevan and Sarah’s song “Tick, Tick, Tock”.

Handwriting

Over the past fortnight the children have been looking at the ‘Rounded Entry Family’ of letters. Our formal handwriting lessons are a highlight of the school week for many of the Year One students. 

Last week our focus was the letter “Nn” and this week our focus was the letter “Rr”. The children are taught the correct placement, of both the capital and lower case letter, within the dotted thirds. 

The students are also taught the correct technique to write each letter, using the Victorian Modern Cursive Script.

Writing

In our writing sessions this term, we have continued to focus on recognising that different types of punctuation, including full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, signal sentences that make statements, ask questions, express emotion or give commands. 

To complement our writing sessions the children have learnt a song titled ‘Sentences’ by Pevan and Sarah. This song covers what you need to remember when writing a sentence, like starting with a capital letter, using punctuation and spaces between words as well as ensuring it makes sense.
