National Simultaneous Story Time

At 11:00am on Wednesday 25th May, students participated in the ‘National Simultaneous Storytime’ event. They enjoyed a digital presentation of the book.  The book is a heartfelt celebration of family, community and the seasons of life, to cherish and to share.

Self-Portraits in G4

Class G4 investigated different global artists like Frida Kohlo and Pablo Picasso and looked at their self-portraits and then talked about our own identities and what makes us unique.

Sammy D presentation - Y2 & Y7

On Friday 27th May, The Sammy D Foundation presented Sam’s story to the Y2 and Y7 students.  It is a story of a young man who tragically died as a result of a violent and unprovoked one punch assault.

The Sammy D Foundation was established in May 2008 in response to his tragic death with the ultimate aim of providing knowledge and skills to young people in order to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.

Sam's story provides students with an example of the characteristics of bullying and violence and the consequences that it has on victims, perpetrators, bystanders, families, friends and the broader community.  The presentation teaches students the importance of being a ‘strong friend’, to form strong friendships and to develop strategies to keep themselves and their friends safe.

Science - Living Things - Growing Well

This term students in R2 have been investigating living things, using the Primary Connections resource "Growing Well". Students used magnifying glasses to investigate insect and animal habitats around the school. We found caterpillars in the Butterfly garden, tadpoles in the Bush Tucker Garden and an entire world of insects in the corner of the oval! We are developing our understanding of what living things need to stay alive.

Mindfulness - R1

Mindful colouring asks us to focus on how we choose and apply colour in a design to bring our awareness to the present moment. This process is similar to meditation , we let go of any thoughts about tomorrow or yesterday, or what we are going to do when we finish.

In R1, we have been practicing art therapy to cultivate mindfulness.  It has created a calming effect on our young minds with increased attention, focus and self-regulation.

National Reconciliation Week

To celebrate National Reconciliation Week in G2, we looked at the story Common Wealth by Gregg Dreise.  The story is a powerful persuasive picture book about changing the national anthem to recognise the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the traditional owners and recognise the hardships they have suffered.

As a class we decided to design a ‘new’ Australian flag, using the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags as inspiration. We looked at why certain colours were used and what they represented.  Red, ochre and black to represent the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, blue to represent the sea, and green to represent the land.
