Out Of School Hours Care

OSHC News

OSHC News Wednesday 9th May, 2018

Our week 1 program continued from last term’s focus on the five senses. Each day followed a particular sense: hearing, sight, smell, taste and touch. This fun program was designed to encourage children to learn about their own skills and apply this knowledge in everyday situations. Creativity, independence, team work and positive interaction between children were some aims of each daily activity. Children displayed effective communication between their peers, especially through games of Chinese Whispers and in the game of a trusted blindfold walk. Both activities focused on different learning intentions for the children to experience. For example, Chinese Whispers allowed the children to try and focus solely on their hearing, and the blindfolded walk showed them what it would feel like to not rely on their sight.

Children enjoyed playing outside as always. We are all trying to enjoy the sunshine before autumn ends! The children were provided with sports equipment to play structured team games, as well as having fun with free choice on the playground and oval.

In week 2, we have structured our program around the concept and practice of ‘RESPECT’. The activities that will be run will allow the children to continue to develop their understanding of respect, and how being respectful is conducive to building positive relationships with their peers.

Children will be defining respect in a hand tracing activity; Checking for respect in a scenario/role based activity run by the educators; Brightening their peers day by writing a compliment for someone else; Conducting a survey/poll in order to get to know their peers a little better; and creating kind and respectful ‘sparkle statements’ to decorate our OSHC room.

The outcome from the activities will allow the students to communicate effectively, positively interact with others, develop empathy and be active.  As a result we are hoping that our OSHC environment will continue to be one that is both educational and positive in fostering the children’s social and emotional wellbeing.
