We had an amazing time on camp! It was great to see so many students having a go at new activities and building their independence. Despite the weather, we all had a go on the giant swing, climb tower, archery, initiatives and low ropes course. Well done to everyone for challenging themselves. It was BRILLIANT to see everyone having a go at the giant swing and the amazing support and encouragement from other students.
When the rain forced us inside, we had lots of fun playing games and doing arts/craft activities. Congratulations to those who built the highest 'shoe stack,' were left standing in a game of 'corners' and had fun during the spaghetti challenge! Meal times were a great opportunity to share the fun activities that had happened throughout the day, and there was also lots of great food. We can't wait for camp next year.
This term we have been learning about place value. We know that the value of a digit can change depending on its place in a number, e.g. the number 9 in the number 397 represents 9 tens. Students have been using their knowledge of place value to read numbers of increasing size. Our next step is to use place value to help us solve addition and subtraction problems.
Money has been another focus this term. We have identified and ordered the different Australian coins and notes and investigated different ways to make the same amount, eg. using different coins to make $5 in as many different ways as possible. In the coming weeks, we will be looking at how to work out change. It would be fantastic if students were able to have the opportunity to hand over real money when shopping with you and experience receiving change.
This month the grade 3/4s got the opportunity to spread JOY and have FUN in learning basketball. The Gumnut community was lucky to get a friendly visit from Basketball Victoria, which taught our students skills and techniques. It was fantastic to see our students at Wollert showing our school values of KINDNESS and BRILLIANT by showing great listening to the coaches, showing teamwork, using encouraging words and having fun as a community.
This month our students have been working hard on their Narrative stories. Students have been working through the 6+1 Traits of writing, which guide them through each step to build their Narrative stories. We have also been exercising our Kung Fu Punctuation skills by learning punctuation symbols and what each symbol is used for in writing.
Throughout this term, the Year 3/4s are investigating our 5 senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste). We have begun by being CURIOUS by asking questions about our senses and creating concept maps showing what we already know. One of our key concepts this term will be around the idea of what needs to happen so that these senses help our learning. For example, our sense of sight requires light that is not too bright and not too dark. We are also beginning to discover that this might be different for different people. When investigating our sense of hearing, we found some people like noise (or music) to help them learn, while others prefer silence. Knowing what helps our own learning will allow students to take greater ownership of their education.
