Outside the Classroom
IDAHOBIT
On Tuesday May 17th Coburg High School celebrated IDAHOBIT - the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia.
Students celebrated the day by adding rainbow accessories to their uniforms.
At recess students enjoyed a bake sale, face-painting and music. At lunchtime, there was a screening of the popular series Heartstopper and a rainbow menu at the Coburg Collective. Teachers across the school also began Period 1 by discussing the importance of IDAHOBIT with their classes.
The bake sale run by the students of Stand Out was a fundraiser for the Save the Children Ukraine Appeal. Stand Out raised $260 on the day, and decided to add an additional $200 from a previous fundraiser to their donation. As such, they will donate $460 to the appeal. This fundraising decision was motivated by a desire to show solidarity with young people whose lives have been severely disrupted and endangered by war. In making this choice, they expressed the idea that their activism is about supporting others as well as themselves.
Well done to everyone involved!

Women's Trade Expo
On a classic Melbourne "four seasons in one day", a group of young women from Coburg went to the Exhibition Centre in the city to taste and test the Young Women's Trade Expo.
It was a jam packed day with the students laying bricks, driving trucks, picking locks and enjoying the great spectrum of trades represented. Students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunities and were inspired for their future careers.

House Program
This term students have been receiving house points for a range of extra-curricular activities.
From the year 10 Peer support leaders assisting on Year 7 camp for three days with some staying for the whole week providing fantastic support for the teachers involved. To the following competitions; interschool boys and girl tennis sports teams, our teams of debaters, cross country trialists, and Moreland division track and field athletics. The Student Voice, House Leaders and the Student Collective are the three groups of students who make up the Student Agency team. Who have also been earning points by being involved in the Student Collective and Sports Shop as well as helping to paint many faces of students and teachers during IDAHOBIT Day on May 17th, which was a great way to see not only support for the LGBTQIA+ community but also the Coburg High School Community. So too were points awarded to Deborah P for winning the Library Masters challenge.
The first round of Coburg High School Masterchef is underway with the following students in the semi-finals after sending in audition videos of themselves making a savoury dish; Jade W (11F), Angus C (7J), Alexei F (7A), Dominic F (7A) & Grace H (8J). VCE Politics goes to Parliament
On Monday 16 May VCE politics students went to Parliament House for an extended tour. We were lucky, in addition to the ordinary tour, to be shown around the 'backstage' areas of parliament house by Fiona Patten MP. Students saw the basements, parliamentary offices, press gallery, the offices of quite a few famous (to politics students, that is) people. Lizzie Blandthorn MP introduced herself as well as Frank McGuire MP.
Year 10 Humanities Day
On Tuesday 17 May, year 10 humanities had a city day with their teachers. Each group attended a court role play at the Old Melbourne Magistrates' Court in Russell St. They had to decide guilt or innocence in a real drink driving case that occurred close to Coburg High. Students also did a tour of the Old Melbourne Gaol and visited the Immigration Museum. The attached pictures show 10A hard at work in the main courtroom.
Debating
On Thursday the eleventh of May Ethan B, Tristan C and I (Henry C) went out to Epping Secondary College to participate in round two of debating. The topic was that we should abolish Australian citizenship test and we all had a great time, narrowly winning against the opposing team of Illim College who were incredible speakers.

Library
Well, there are a few announcements for the library this term.
Firstly, we had the May edition of Library Trivia Master which was won by the 2021 carry over champion, Deborah P. Congratulations on your win.
It was a hotly contested competition this time around and I must give a shout out to Anna E who only lost out due to a technicality. Good luck next time Anna.
It’s that time of the year again where students and staff of CHS are going to descend upon the library in their droves. Yes, it is the biannual Big Book Sale Fundraiser for the library! YAY!!! It will be happening on Thursday 26th May. So, set the date and start putting your money away. There are some truly amazing books in this one. I am very excited for this one.
Since 2019, the library has employed some fantastic Library Assistants and this year is no different. Justice O has been an enthusiastic new addition to the upper echelons of assisting the librarian several times a week since Term 1. So, welcome Justice to this very elite club. You have earned your place with your passion, intelligence and enthusiasm.
The library has also received some awesome new furniture to help seat all of the students who love to come to the library during the school day. We should now be able to fit the masses. YIPPEE!
Lastly, I would personally like to thank the CHS community and The Conversation for the incredibly generous book donations so far this year. I am absolutely humbled by this generosity and thank all of you.
Until the next newsletter….

Year 7 Camp
The first week of May saw the year 7 class of 2022 alongside 20 year 10 peer support leaders travel to Yarra Junction’s ADANAC camp. This week saw students enjoying 10 different activities over three days including; Stand-up paddle boarding, Mountain Boarding, Disc Golf, Cage Soccer, Arrowsoft Archery, Flying Foxing, Low Ropes, Hut Building, Fire side Damper cooking and Tread Walling. As well as evenings of camp fires under the stars with the added bonus of a poi light show from Gillian and movies in the theatre space, Gaga ball, trampolines and board games. Luckily the weather held out allowing for both groups of students to enjoy every activity including the 110m waterslide and hill rolling. Many laughs and memories were made over meals and activities.
Geography

Athletics Meet
Amazing performance from the Athletics meet. There was a lot of participation in all of the track and field events from all year levels with lots of support for everyone involved shown by cheering as people came down the track running or telling students how well they did no matter their result. We got fantastic results and participation. Well done to all the athletes involved and good luck to all who go through to the next round, your school is behind you cheering loud!
