National Reconciliation Week

National Sorry Day

National Sorry Day was on Thursday 26th of May. National Sorry Day remembers and acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, which we now know as ‘The Stolen Generations’.

Our Year 7-9 students had the opportunity to listen to Aboriginal Elder, Uncle John Baxter. Uncle John came to our school and spoke to our students about his first-hand account being forcibly taken from his family and about reconciliation.

Reconciliation Week

The National Reconciliation Week 2022 theme, “Be Brave. Make Change.” is a challenge to all Australians— individuals, families, communities, organisations and government—to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.

Throughout the week, students at Heathmont College will undertake activities during Mentor Group to recognise and take action against racism. They will learn how to be a brave ally. They will learn the Country they are on. They will learn about Culture.

Throughout the week, students will also have the opportunity to watch “Rabbit Proof Fence” as a special lunchtime activity.
