Science Club
This week we looked at a three different experiments illustrating different types of FORCES in Science Club.
- CD hovercraft - we attached an inflated balloon to a CD that had a stopper with a hole glued to it. When the balloon deflated, the air thrust from the balloon pushes the hovercrafts mass away from the table, thereby reducing the friction between the CD and the table.
- Skewer a balloon - we carefully pushed a wooden skewer through the least elastic parts of a balloon. The rubber will grip onto the skewer due to friction and stop the air from escaping.
- Balancing a hammer on a ruler - we attached a hammer to a wooden ruler with a piece of string and then found the point at which the hammer could balance, suspended by the ruler. It balances because as gravity pulls down on the hammer’s head, the handle pushes back upwards on the ruler, illustrating Newton’s 3rd law of motion.
We will not be running Science Club next fortnight, due to many assessments happening in Years 7-9. We will recommence Science Club in Week 7.
Remember all are welcome every Day 4, 1.00 pm in S2... we would love to see some more Year 7 students!

Year 11 Biology Excursion
Last Friday, Year 11 Biology classes attended an excursion to Bicentennial Park at Homebush as part of their studies in “Ecosystem Dynamics” where they conducted firsthand investigations in the field. Measuring abiotic components such as pH, temperature, humidity, and wind speed at two different locations as well as estimating distribution by creating a transect.
We learnt some of the history of the area including indigenous aspects and how the Sydney 2000 Olympics was the impetus for remediation of a highly polluted ecosystem.
Students seemed to enjoy the hands-on activities that provided useful background to their Depth Studies which will be due for completion soon.

Year 9 Photography
This week Year Nine Photography processed a black and white film, and then went into the darkroom to print black and white photographs. They learnt how to use the different enlargers in the darkroom to print their photographs. The whole process was an enjoyable learning experience.
