Simple Study Tips!

1. Use mnemonic devices – these can aid information retention and help with giving cues to jog your memory.

2. Use diagrams to get your thoughts out and create mental associations –  they can help visualise concepts and help you understand more complex connections better.

3. Use YouTube to help you understand – there are many videos out there that can help you understand concepts, especially if you are a visual learner, and they make learning interesting.

4. Study on the go – there are free apps available, eg Quizlet, where you can make your own flashcards and then use them to study whilst in the car, on the train or waiting for basketball training.

5. Read your notes out loud – studies show that you are more likely to remember something if you read it out loud, compared to reading it over and over again in your head.

6. Switch up your space – this forces your brain to make associations with the information that you are taking in.

7. Take practice tests and make sure you mark them – they can show you the holes in your knowledge and what topics you may need to study more. They also allow you to practise recalling information as you would in a test or exam.

8. Reward yourself with a treat – if you feel good about studying, you are more likely to do it; treats can increase your motivation.

9. Walk before an exam – studies have shown that exercise can boost your memory, so 20 minutes before your exam, do some exercise.

10. Meditate – meditation can help reduce stress which will allow you to be more focused, more creative and have a better memory.
