Year 8 English

with Mr David Eccleston

Visual Communication

During this term’s Zoom lessons, Year 8 English worked on a program learning about how to print cartoons and memes,  communicating meanings through their use of words and images, many of which dealt with contemporary issues. They responded to enquiry questions and read and learnt from teacher notes about a print cartoon composed by Australia’s Michael Leunig. They looked at many examples of Leunig’s cartoons before choosing a print cartoon or meme they found appealing and writing about its meanings and how these meanings were made by the literary and visual techniques adopted.

Their final task was to compose a print cartoon or meme of their own. Some dealt with social isolation, the damage we cause to our environment, with some making their reader/viewer laugh. The two published here are a perfect, relevant meme and a hand-drawn print cartoon celebrating how well we have done over the last few months. We hope you enjoy some of the fruits of their work.
