Learning for Life

EEP

Today was a very exciting day in EEP we got a new wooden pirate ship. The children loved playing on the ship pretending that they were sailing across the sea looking at dolphins and sharks. This week we started our Dinosaur theme, each room has been making lots of dinosaur craft and learning new dinosaur songs. In EEP the children are also getting ready for Mother’s Day, each room has started making presents and cards for their mums. Some of the Children also started swimming in the new hydrotherapy pool, they had fun splashing in the water with the physios.

Lower Junior

Lower Junior students have all settled back into the school routine after the school holiday. Some of the students have been lucky enough to start hydrotherapy this term with Elisa and Sarah. The students are very excited to come back and tell the teachers what they have done. In English and Maths we have had an Autumn theme which students have enjoyed making their own trees and counting and looking a leaves. We are sad to see Jimmy leave our section and wish him all the best for his new job. We are very happy to welcome Jen to the school as P4’s new teacher.

Upper Junior

Upper Junior have had a great start to the new term, with our new theme of ‘Under the Sea’. Students have been engaged in activities in English and Mathematics focused on this theme, including counting sea creatures and completing activities around the story The Rainbow Fish, as well as exploring the theme in exploratory and developmental play sessions.

Upper Secondary

The Upper Secondary students have been busy enjoying their various programs. Travel Education, P.E, Work skills, Functional Academics, Art, Music and Life Skills are incorporated into the week.

Travel Education

The Upper secondary school have been busy getting out and about doing various programs. Travel Education is a favourite with students travelling by public transport or walking to various destinations. Students are using their Myki cards, planning their destination using the PTV app and shopping for items whilst they are out.

Work Skills

Work skills is an important part of the seniors program. We have been delivering catalogues to the local area and woodwork and restoration of the old outdoor settings in the Nail It shed. Students learn to use tools and work to sand back the old furniture to renew the old furniture.

Canteen

Each week the students work hard in the canteen. Have you tried the homemade sausage rolls and burgers? They are delicious! The students collate and shop for the items. Then they make and deliver lunch orders for the whole school! Then students count the money as part of their functional academics class! What a great job they do!

Bike Camp

On Monday 29th March, students Adam, Declan, Dom, Abbey, Achoul and Paige along with staff Lisa, Rosin and Brendan set off on a camping and biking adventure to Myrtleford to participate in the Alpine 100 ride in association with Blackwood Outdoor Camp.  Months of preparation had gone into this trip with students building up their fitness and learning how to safely use mountain bikes, change gears, brake and ride on paths.

We arrived and set up camp and the students got to explore – the boys loved exploring and collecting bugs! That evening we headed to the Myrtleford Football Club where the seniors players put on some footy activities and a BBQ dinner for us all.

Students did so well sleeping in tents and getting themselves up at 6:30am, getting organised for breakie, dressed and ready for each day.  Our 1st riding day started out at Beechworth and we followed the old rail trail back to Myrtleford.  There we a couple of challenging sections along the way in big rolling hills but our students all did really well.  We rode 46km for the day through some glorious countryside with stunning views of mountain ranges.

The next day saw our biggest challenge, the 60km return ride from Myrtleford to Bright.  Our students did so well with fantastic mountain views along the way. We even stopped to pick fresh apples off the tress and feast!  Students rode strong, stayed together and supported one another.  We are so proud of our students completing a total of 106 km in 2 days.

It was a fantastic trip, well done students and a huge thank you to the staff for your time, effort and enthusiasm.

Annual Footy Day

On Tuesday 23rd March Yarrabah had its annual footy day.  Senior students put on a special canteen menu and workers from the St Kilda Football Club along with volunteers from SEDA came down to put our students through their paces, teach them new skills and run them through some drills. Students from the middles through to the seniors came down to the sport hall and had a ball with the players kicking, marking and handballing their way to success.
