Japan Celebrates Children on May 5

Every year, on the 5th of May, Japan celebrates children and childhood with Children’s Day. This day was made a public holiday in 1948 celebrating all children, after a long history of being a day to celebrate boys, and their health and wellbeing. The symbols of Children’s Day reflect that history, with many families displaying samurai helmets and armour, ‘kabuto’ かぶとand ‘yoroi’ よろい, irises ‘shoubu’しょうぶ, and carp streamers ‘koi nobori’ こいのぼり.

This festival occurs approximately 2 months after Girl’s Day ‘hinamatsuri’ ひなまつり, which is not a public holiday, and at the end of a series of public holidays that are collectively called ‘Golden Week’ as it is often the longest period of holidays that workers may take each year.

MULTICULTURAL COMMITTEE NEWS

Welcome back to a new term.

We had our second meeting for this year on Monday, 26 April, at lunchtime in the Conference Room with refreshments on offer and twenty members in attendance.

We had the great delight of our VCE and VCAL student leaders, Yatana, Ae Tablay ,Narjis, Nooria and Morsal, as guest speakers presenting: ‘SETTLE  WELL SPEAKERS GROUP’ which is a public speaking workshop for young people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds (CALD) and a new exciting project by Catholic Care to cater for these students. The girls' delivery was very informative and impressive as they shared their presentation, speaking in front of this group and already showing their skills and passion for public speaking.

This project is such an exciting experience and the girls are very keen to look into the potential of future programs to benefit more students at NGSC, in particular EAL students.

This is a valuable program for networking with service providers in the wider community and NGSC via the Multicultural Committee.

The next meeting will be in Term Two on Monday, 31 May, at lunch time 12:45 pm.

For more information on the Multicultural Committee, or if you wish to keep up to date or get more involved with school events, feel free to contact Vera Dudas via the school’s Administration Office.
