CAMP SUMMIT

The year 9 -10 camp was a great success with 54 students attending the one night 2 day Adventure leadership camp.

The camp set the students a number of individual and team based challenges that encouraged the students physically and mentally to achieve their objectives.  On day one the adventure challenges involved high ropes, crossing rope bridges, problem solving and time trials including mud pits.

A core part of the Leadership Camp was the students participation in a workshop where they discussed and explored their beliefs, what drives them to achieve their ambitions and to consider the behaviour and or beliefs that may be preventing them from achieving their full potential. The workshop was facilitated by Matt, Maddie, Ash from the Summit and involved the student writing on one side wooden board empowering statements and on the other limiting statements. The were then instructed on how to break the board as a metaphor for breaking through their own limitations.  I am very pleased to confirm all of the students successfully broke  their boards.

On the final day the students started the day with a reflection activity and short meditation session were they were encouraged to consider how fortunate they are relative to the many less fortunate people throughout the world prompted by visual images on the large screen.

The students then embarked on their second day of adventure challenges where they had the opportunity to build on their capacities to be resilient, persist, to collaborate, to work as a team and to be prepared to step out out beyond their normal comfort zone.

CAREERS EXPO

This will provide students with a personalised support  platform that will help students make better decisions about subjects, courses, careers and apprenticeships. This assessment will help young people discover a career path that inspires them. Given this information, attendance at the Whittlesea Career Expo is organised for June 10th. This will be a great opportunity for students to explore and interact people representing a range of possible career pathways through conversations with professionals and trades people from a range of industries and careers. There will be extensive  information available to collect and the students will have assessment tasks linked to the event so it is mandatory for all students to attend.  We ask all parents to support this and other upcoming course and career events by providing prompt consent and payment for bus transport. More details will be provided shortly.

EXAMS & WORK EXPECTATIONS

All students will sit exams in their core subjects in the last week of term - from June 21st - June 23rd. To support students improve their study skills, we have engaged the services of Elevate to run Year 10 Exam Study Skill workshops in early May.

In order for student to successfully complete  their year 10 studies we seek your support to ensure all students have charged devices, access to e-books and are ready to learn.   It is essential all students complete the set  work in class and at home is essential. As a guide, we recommend at least 30mins homework per night, which could include independent reading, continuation of classwork, projects, assignments, essays and research. Online programs such as Education Perfect, Mathletics and Spellodrome could be undertaken.

Practising tasks related to their personal reading, writing and numeracy goals which include self-directed study are also advised. Seeking assistance and direction in the classroom is strongly encouraged when students are unsure.

We also plan to offer after school opportunities for extra coaching. Precise details to be provided soon.

Pat Cronin - Story behind the Foundation

On Saturday the 16th of April 2016, Pat went out to a local bar / café for a quiet night and he was punched from behind whilst assisting a mate. He was later taken to hospital and two days later his family made the agonising decision to turn off his life support system.

The Pat Cronin Foundation honours Pat by providing an optimistic voice to awareness, education and research about the coward punch. The Pat Cronin Foundation is dedicated to helping people feel empowered to make change through wise decisions.

A representative from the Foundation will address all students on Friday 23rd April. This will be a great lesson for life.
