Dear Parents,
Welcome to the Term One Level 5 Newsletter.
Reading
In Level 5 we are continuing to utilise Reader’s Workshop. Students engage in authentic reading experiences whether individual, in partners, a small group and as a class. Workshops vary in length and encompasses teaching, selecting and reading a good fit book, recording and sharing our thoughts about a given text.
In Term Two, students are encouraged to think about their reading with a focus on determining the main topic and ideas about a non fiction text. They will identify key details, analyse text features and how an author engages their reader.
Weekly Focus
Week 1 - 2: Main Topics and Ideas for non-fiction texts
Week 3 - 4: Key Details
Week 5 - 6: Text Features
Week 7 - 8: Engaging the reader
Week 9 - CAMP
Week 10 - Revision of the terms strategies
Writing
Term Two’s writing genre focus will be persuasive writing. This is always a very popular genre as it gives students a chance to voice their opinions in new and creative ways. As well as the traditional structured writing pieces, we will be encouraging students to think of other ways they can apply the persuasive writing skills about which they will be learning, such as letters and speeches. After some activities to help them generate ideas for their writing, we will be exploring a variety of persuasive devices to include in their pieces such as emotive language, alliteration, use of statistical evidence and rhetorical questions.
Weeks 1 and 2 : Introducing Persuasive Writing and Generating Ideas
Weeks 3 and 4 : Persuasive Devices
Weeks 5 and 6 : Persuasive Writing Structure

Maths
This term in maths, we are focusing on the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). We will be exploring each operation, its relationship with the other operations and the multitude of strategies that can be used to solve problems. This will include a variety of mental and written strategies, with a focus on open ended activities and real-world situations. We are also going to be having a key focus on times tables as they are vital for not only multiplication and division, but our fractions unit next term. In addition to our number focus, we will be integrating concepts of measurement throughout our units (such as perimeter and areas), to make their learning more authentic and related to real life outside of the classroom.
