Literacy
Reading
This term in Reading, Level 3/4 students are learning about a variety of reading comprehension strategies. These will include ‘making inferences’, ‘identifying the main idea’ and ‘fact & opinion’.
Weekly focus:
Weeks 1-3: Making Inferences
Week 4: NAPLAN (Level 3)
Weeks 5-7: Finding the Main Idea (Fiction and Non-Fiction)
Weeks 8-10: Fact and Opinion
Writing
Throughout Term 2, students will be focusing on persuasive writing. They will develop skills in recognising the structure and features of persuasive texts. Students will be focusing on the writing traits of word choice and organisation, as well as arguing and reasoning their opinions, using persuasive language and sequencing their ideas to enhance their persuasive pieces.

Spelling and Grammar
We will continue to use the school wide Jolly Phonics program which gives students five essential skills for reading and writing: Learning the letter sounds, Learning letter formation, Blending, Identifying sounds in words, and Tricky words. In grammar we will be learning about nouns, adjectives, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, homophones and tenses.
Weekly focus:
Week 1: Schwa <a> making ‘uh’ as in ‘pasta’ and synonyms as in ‘big, huge and ginormous’.
Week 2: Schwa <o> making ‘uh’ as in ‘opposite and concrete nouns, including; things we can smell, touch, see, taste and hear.
Weeks 3-4: Schwa <u> making ‘uh’ as in ‘focus’ and abstract nouns, including; the names for ideas, feelings, actions, qualities and events.
Week 5: Schwa <ar> making ‘uh’ as in ‘grammar’ and possessive nouns, including; nouns that have an apostrophe <s>.
Week 6: Schwa <or> making ‘uh’ as in ‘author’ and present participles as adjectives, including; adjectives used to describe nouns.
Week 7- 8: Schwa <er> making ‘uh’ as in ‘pattern’ and comparatives and superlatives: ‘more and most’, ‘less and least’.
Week 9: <or> for the /er/ sound as in ‘worm’ and changing verb tenses, including; past, present, future, simple and continuous tense.
Week 10: <ear> for the /er/ sound as in ‘earn’ and homophones, including; ‘its’ and ‘it’s’.

Maths
This Term our number focus is addition and subtraction. We will be focusing on strategies such as common addiction facts to 20, counting on, doubles and near doubles, split strategy , jump strategy and adding tens. Students will also explore the connection between addition and subtraction and will problem solve demonstrating the understanding of the most effective and efficient mental and written strategies.
Through the Statistics and Probability curriculum we will be developing our understanding of data and graphing. Students will represent data by creating lists, tables and graphs. They will then interpret this data by asking questions about their data collected.
Within our Measurement and Geometry curriculum, students will be exploring the concepts of time and length. Students will learn to read time on analogue and digital clocks to the minute, the hour, half past, quarter past and quarter to the hour as well as the duration of and elapsed time. We will measure, order and compare familiar objects using informal and formal units of measure for length.

Inquiry - ‘Where Does It Come From?’
In Inquiry this term, Level 3/4 are learning about Design & Technology. Students will be using inquiry skills and graphic organisers to increase their understanding.
These are the level essential questions students will engage in throughout the inquiry unit:
- What is the process from production to consumption?
- What tools and equipment are used in production?
- What is fibre?
- How has production and consumption changed over time?
- Where does our food come from?
- What are the differences between natural and man made products?
