Student Led Conferences

We are all eagerly preparing for our upcoming Student Led Conferences. At Oakleigh Grammar, The Leader In Me process promotes students, parents and teachers to be viewed as partners in learning. This is considered to be a vital part in developing essential learning habits and leadership habits in life.

Student Led Conferences

Student Led Conferences are an excellent form of assessment and reporting, that include all the participants in the learning process. This is a valuable opportunity for students to be the driver in communicating their future goals, and celebrate their achievements with parents. As the student takes a proactive role in their conference, this increased accountability moves the student from being a passive participant to an active one.

Sharing Student Leadership Portfolios

During the Student Led Conference, your child will showcase their Leadership Portfolio. They will share their personal and academic goals, assessment tracking data and personally selected work samples from both classroom and specialist lessons, that have been selected to highlight their accomplishments.

Where and When are the Student Led Conferences Held?

Student Led Conferences will be held in your child’s classroom on Monday 2nd September 2019, between 4pm – 8pm. Student attendance is compulsory. You will receive information regarding our booking process in the coming week. Your role is critical to the success of the conference.

  1. Your first role is as a listener. Having a parent audience for learning gives students a powerful reason to learn and work hard.
  2. Your second role as a parent is to talk with your child about the samples that are presenting. You will gain a better understanding of the academic expectations set for your child.
  3. Your third role as a parent is to identify ways you can support your child to achieve goals that have been set for future success.

Hints for having a successful conference with your child:

  • Express pride in growth and progress
  • Acknowledge effort
  • Ask questions
  • Be positive – offering help in areas where improvement is needed
  • Listen and respond to your child
  • Try not to interrupt. If your child needs support, his/her teacher will help him/her to move forward.
