Remembrance Day
On Saturday 11 November at 11am, we paused to commemorate the 99th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War 2.
Students Molly Nyhuis, Lotus Fakatava and Lochie Large represented Lilydale High School at the Lilydale Cenotaph at the invitation of the RSL.
Molly’s poignant words summed up the emotions of the day;
"Remembrance Day pauses the nation briefly in reflection at the eleventh hour. As part of the younger generation, I too like to take the time to reflect upon the sacrifices made by so many that enable me to live the life I do today. Although I am not directly associated, I do feel as though everything around me has been influenced by such courageous and patriotic individuals.
As we commemorate today, I feel proud to be an Australian. I feel proud to be a part of a culture of which originated from such bravery and mateship. And most of all, I feel proud to be able to stand before you all today and join in remembering the lives we have lost in the line of duty.
I would like to take this time to pay my respects to our members of the forces both past and present, and bestow upon you my greatest gratitude from the members of Lilydale High School, for without you and all that you have given, we would not be here today.”
Lotus read John McRae’s moving poem, ‘In Flanders Fields’, that was written in the early days of the second battle of Ypres;
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Lochie and Molly then laid a wreath on behalf of the students and staff of the school in acknowledgement of the service and sacrifice of our service men and women in all of the wars and armed conflicts that Australians have been involved.
Molly, Lotus and Lochie are to be commended for giving up their time to support our local community and pay their respects.
Lest we forget.

Remembrance Day Assembly
On Friday 10/11/2017, the students from Years 7 to 10 gathered together to pay their respects to the members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty.
Liam Huddleston played the last post which is played on Remembrance Day signalling that a soldier has gone to his final rest.
While Liam was playing, the silence in the stadium was emotionally moving as our thoughts went to those who had fought and died for our freedom.
Connor and Molly our Year 10 Captains were our MC for our Remembrance Day Assembly.
To speak at the assembly were our Year 7 Captains Briana, Weston and our Year 7 Vice Captain Kelsey, to talk about the 100th year anniversary of Beersheba.
We had Sienna our Year 8 Captain doing the Ode and the Year 8 Vice Captains Lara and Zac to talk about what Remembrance Day is about and Reuben Watson-Low and Keira Oconnor, Year 9 Captains were time keepers.
The Remembrance Day Assembly was a emotionally touching and special moment that gave us the opportunity to remember and respect our soldiers and reflect on how grateful we are for our freedom and way of life.
