LEARNING MATTERS

YEAR 9 - PEAK PERFORMANCE

Peak Performance is a popular BYTES elective that looks into how athletes improve their physical performance off the field through strength and conditioning programs. Over 6 weeks, Year 9 students learn about the musculoskeletal system, various training principles, basic movement patterns and exercises within a resistance training program. Recently the class visited Woodford Sport Science Consulting (WSSC) gym to learn about muscle activation, and correct lifting technique.

They also conducted initial tests on their vertical jump and pull-ups as a primary reading for their re-testing which will occur later on in the elective. The students are also lucky to have access to the McKinnon Strength and Conditioning Room which has received a major upgrade - it is now possible for them to carry out their own resistance training program under the movement patterns and muscle grouping of "push, pull, legs and core". The Peak Performance elective has been designed to be highly interactive in order to engage our kinaesthetic learners, whilst giving them a taste of the science behind sport and the human body, which links directly with VCE Physical Education.
