From the Principal

Welcome back

Welcome Back. I hope all families had a wonderful holiday and experienced some wonderful family activities. Like all terms, Term 4 is a busy one with lots of school happenings.

New Staff

In our last newsletter we said farewell to Ingrid Polwarth who has been fortunate to obtain a promotion position at the new Armstrong Creek School. After a long interview process we have now appointed Kim Brown as our new Business Manager at Rollins. Kim comes from Melbourne and has recently settled in the Geelong area. Kim comes with a wealth of knowledge and will be a definite asset to our Rollins community. Welcome Kim.

Don't forget your hats!

Just to remind everyone that Term 4 is hat term! Please ensure your child has a navy broad- brimmed hat that is clearly named. Unfortunately students without hats will need to stay indoors during recess and lunch. This is rarely necessary as I think everyone now understands the need for protecting young skin.

Geelong Cup- Holiday

Please note that Wednesday, 23rd October is Geelong Cup Day which is a scheduled public holiday in the City Of Greater Geelong. It is important to be aware that as a school we do not have any choice in this matter and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

2020 Placement

At Rollins, we work thoughtfully to build future class groupings. Teachers work together (literally for hours) forming classes for the coming year. They consider student learning styles, behaviour needs, student personalities, gender (even numbers of boys and girls) and many other factors to create classrooms where students will work well together and with their teacher. It is a complex process. Our goal is always to create the most balanced classes possible.

Parents are invited to advise us of any considerations that they would like us to take into account for student placement in 2020. If you would like to take this opportunity, I ask that you provide your thoughts in writing to me, no later than Monday 14th October 2019. Unfortunately, we are unable to consider requests after this date. Please note we cannot meet requests for specific teachers and, although we try our best to meet all requests, we cannot give guarantees.

Oval

They say good things come to those who wait! The tender process was extremely complicated, quite long and out of our control. Over the school holidays we finally signed off on the tender for the construction of the school oval. It will be synthetic and will comprise 4 running lanes and a long jump pit.  Construction will begin on Monday 21st October and should be completed by the end of December, early January.  We are in the process of organising some additional student activities while the oval is out of action. Once the oval is completed we will have an official opening ceremony.

Swimming

Last term the Grade 1 &2 students were involved in an intensive swimming program. It was great to see the students so excited about this program. The increase in confidence as the program unfolded was amazing. Hopefully, many students will be able to further develop these vital life skills by enrolling in swimming lessons or swimming courses in the months ahead.

Many thanks to Hayley Womersley for organising this intensive program. Great job Hayley.

School Camp Grade 3/4

A reminder to parents that the final payment for the Grade ¾ Camp is due this Friday (11th October).

Principal's Pondering

A Growth Mindset message...

Research has explained a growth mindset as ‘a willingness to confront challenges, viewing failure as a springboard for growth, and a passion for learning. Not surprisingly, this type of mindset is strongly linked to greater happiness and achievement in life.’ Children who are happy, comfortable, safe and confident have a greater outcome with learning and socialising.

Here’s a child friendly video as made by one of our communication apps, Class Dojo, that explains it brilliantly. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zrtHt3bBmQ
