Language & Culture Program

Kii (hello),

We have had a burndap-dhak (very good) start to 2020. All classes have focused on learning and deepening our understanding of the TPS Values, what it means to be a deadly learner and how this all applies in the Koorie Room.

Foundation classes have been introduced to a few animal Dreaming stories which we have used to reflect upon character actions and to make links to our school values. Students have also learned about their class animal totem. The main language focus in Foundation so far, is about learning some basic classroom commands, toilet and drink requests, answering yes/no to simple questions, counting 1-100, and some basic greetings. Students will learn about the use and meaning of the word ‘Wurundjeri’.

Students in grades 1-6 are continuing to learn and practice greetings and introductions, basic conversation phrases and classroom commands. Students will also continue to develop their knowledge of the different sounds in the Woiwurrung language, and depending on their grade level, the associated letter patterns used to write these sounds - 1-2 will focus on short vowels and single letter consonants; 3-6 will focus on short and long vowels, single and double letter consonants. This term students will continue to grow and consolidate their vocabulary knowledge of family/people nouns, as well as singular and plural pronouns.
