The TPS Enviro Team will be meeting on Friday Feb 28th at 3.40pm in front of the tool shed in the Prep Garden to discuss what’s happening for the year.

New members and ideas are always welcome. Your commitment can be big or small. Bring a nut free snack to share for the kids.

Our next Working Bee is happening on Sat March 21st, 10am-3pm.

Keep an eye out for more information and the sign up sheet link on Compass and around the school.

The Enviro Team is a sub-committee of School Council. We oversee the development and care of the garden spaces, encourage sustainable practice across the school, support the TPS Gardening programs, and are responsible for the care of our school chickens. In recent years we have developed the Farm produce garden, the Babajen Dreaming Garden and shade sail area between the Babajen and Prep Garden, the Indigenous Weaving Garden, and Food Forest on Hutton St. side, completed a Junior Landcare project, and Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation grant project.

FoodWeb: all students participate in the FoodWeb eco-literacy gardening program during the year. In Term 1 grades 3/4 and 5/6 are taking part on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Volunteer helpers from the school community are encouraged to assist our fabulous garden educator Aviva Reed. Ask your class teacher when you can help. All volunteers must have a current Working With Children Check, and sign into the office.

Projects currently under the Enviro Team umbrella at the moment include:

  • Renovating the Kitchen Garden Classroom into a useable space. This is our next big project and we’ll need lots of fundraising for it.
  • Getting a new flock of chickens this Autumn
  • A rubbish reduction, and organic waste recycling campaign
  • The Octopus School travel program
  • The care and maintenance of our newly developed native gardens and continuing planting for them
  • Working Bees

Dear Parents & Caregivers,

Wominjeka from the Malpa - Young Doctor Program. We have been running our sessions for over four years and have named our groups the Bubup Doctors. This means ‘young child’ in the Woi Wurrung language.

Thornbury Primary School continues to take part in this project, with a small group of students across grades 3-6. I am managing this project for Thornbury PS. I am familiar to many students as both a parent at the school and community member. I will be supervising the delivery of the program with the teacher – Melanie Harrison who will deliver the weekly sessions. Melanie is an Aboriginal teacher who has been at Thornbury Primary school for over ten years.

The children will be involved in weekly activities, which are fun and focussed around 6 main topics:

Nutrition, Health Literacy, Environmental Health, Hygiene, Leadership and Emotional Wellbeing. We have weekly sessions and each fortnight we have special guests attend our sessions such as: Ambulance Victoria, the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS) and Lee Couch – Wayapa.

These sessions will begin Friday the 28th of February, 20. The purpose of the activities is to help provide the students with life skills in health and wellbeing to take through their life into adulthood. We also work in a real way with community Elders, respected community members and guest speakers during the project.

Your child has been chosen as someone who may like to take part in the 15 week program. If you agree for your child to take part in the project, please fill out the permission slip below and return it to the school as soon as possible. Any questions, please contact myself or Melanie at Thornbury Primary School.

Kind Regards,

Shara Graham

Parents & Carers Craft Group

Kii TPS community,

Welcome back for 2020!  Welcome new families! We are a group of parents and carers who come together every Wednesday (just about) and have a lovely time doing some craft. Items we make are sold back to the school community during Arts Festival or other social gatherings.  The money made goes back to the Arts programme at school.

Some of you might remember Toshi the turtle from our raffle item last Arts Festival. Toshi is made from felt that have been hand-dyed and lovingly stitched up natural filling. Toshi was offered up as a raffle item with a beautiful wet felted ocean/sand scene.

We are currently trying to use up scraps to make useful items, like little lavender pouches and trialling  making pencil cases.

So we welcome all who’s interested in crafting and a yarn. We are in the Arts room every Wednesdays. But we ask if you can email us at tpscraftgroup@gmail.com if you like to be involved so we can keep you in the loop if plan changes for the week. Toddlers welcomed!

Craftily yours,

Bernie and Yaz
