Arrernte Boxing Academy - still helping to change young people's paths in Alice Springs

Arnold Baird, a 14-year-old from the Arrernte community and current student at St Philip's College, is a boxer with a goal to go professional. He started boxing three years ago to prove himself and get away from the wrong crowd. With the suggestion from his father, he joined the Arrernte Boxing Academy, where he found discipline and a safe space. The gym's head coach, Jason Lord, a retired boxing champion, understands the positive impact of boxing on young people and runs the gym as a mentorship program. The gym provides discipline, support, and helps young people stay out of trouble. Classes are offered for women, families, and after-school programs. The gym also works with local schools and social enterprises. The gym has received some funding from the Northern Territory government, but consistent funding would help the program thrive. Despite the lack of funding, Jason loves doing the work and will continue to volunteer.
