Year 8's Displaying Skills

Today our Year 8 students began a 5-day cross curricular program, designed to allow students to showcase the skills and knowledge they have learned over the year.

They have been asked to choose one topic or skill that they have covered over the year and to branch out from that, to create something (a model, a film, a piece of writing etc.) that they can present at our Expo on Thursday, November 29th from 2.30-3.20.

Students will follow the design process over the course of the project:

– Investigate (what is it that they need/intend to do, a design brief);

– Plan (Scale model, story boarding and scripting, including a project journal, and timeline);

– Create (a product, a report, or a creative writing piece about their chosen area); and

– Evaluate/Reflect (evaluate whether they have achieved their goal, and reflect on

what they would change next time, how well have they shown the Trinity Difference

in their learning).

There are several aims of the project, to give students choice in what they are learning, to showcase student achievements to staff, students, and family. As well as increasing student responsibility for their learning, and to further develop student initiative to ask for help, and to know who to ask.

With these aims in mind, students will have 3-4 lessons a day where they will be working on their projects. They will be given a rough plan of what they should be working on, e.g. day 1: planning, but it is up to them to ensure the work is complete.

Their normal class teachers will be supervising, and ensuring that they are on task, but it is up to the student to decide what they will work on and when.

Wednesday, November 28th is the construction day, where they will be creating their projects. Students have put in an order from a list of materials (Cardboard, twine, coloured paper, tape, straws) that the school will provide and there may be some materials that they have said they will provide (coloured pens and pencils, glue sticks etc).

We would like to invite you to talk to your student about their project and to view their work at our Expo on Thursday, November 29th from 2.30-3.20. We look forward to seeing you there.
