Hello Foundation Families!

The past fortnight has seen our Foundation students practising the addition skills they learnt earlier in the year. They have been playing different games to practise the ‘count on’ and ‘doubles’ strategies – please practise these at home if you can!

In Reading and Writing, our focus has been on procedural texts. The students have practised reading and following procedural texts and enjoyed making paper aeroplanes and pirate hats. They also had a go at writing a procedural text to match the pirate hat instructions.

Our Integrated unit has involved designing posters that promote positive actions for the community and environment.

Thank you to all the family members who have volunteered to help with Swimming next week- we really appreciate it! Please ensure everything is labelled and you have spoken to your child about what the Swimming days will involve, including the importance of road safety, independence when getting changed and listening to their swimming instructors.

Our Melbourne Zoo excursion is fast approaching. We will be in touch next week regarding what your child will need to have on the day.

Have a great weekend!

Grade 1

Following our excursion to the Queen Victoria Market, the Grade One’s were inspired by how many different kinds of fruits and vegetables we saw. They learnt about the nutritional value of different coloured fruit and vegetables and talked about the importance of ‘eating the rainbow’ to maximise their health.

The students then painted a giant rainbow and drew as many different fruits and vegetables of each colour to add to it. The rainbow is now on display in our area and is a great reminder of how we should all be ‘eating the rainbow’ every day!

In Literacy, the Grade One’s have been learning about different types of poetry. They explored the features of acrostic poems and then created their own about a chosen topic. The students also learnt about shape poems. They wrote a shape poem about rainbows by connecting their learning about our Integrated Curriculum topic and what they had learnt about this type of poetry.

The Year 2 Water Bottle Flip Challenge

Learning how to graph data and create picture graphs with a “key” is lots of fun especially when we flipped a water bottle to try to make it stand up so to get our data!

We had different individual and team challenges and tried fun “tricks”.

We’re keen to try it at home to see who at home are our champs! Maths is fun!

Grade 3/4

Fractions:

I really enjoyed learning about fractions and something I learned was improper fractions. Improper fractions is where the numerator is bigger than the denominator and improper fractions are always bigger than one whole.

By Stefanie Gannon

I love fractions because you can learn decimals pretty easily and also improper fractions. It's easy to do them.

By Afraz Ali

In fractions we have been learning about every type of fraction. We have been doing activities like, make your own fractions and many more. I know the 3/4 ’s love fractions.

By Tennyson Heller

The 3/4 area loved fractions including me. We learnt so much about fractions with games that were really fun and you will get alot more information from other people.

   Flipped classroom

On Tuesday and Wednesday the 3/4 area did flipped classroom. It is where the students become the teachers and make a lesson to teach your partner a skill to do with fractions.

We had to include fractions and five questions to help your student learn the skill.

We also had to include a learning intention so the student could know what they are going to learn.

I liked being able to use the digital teaching tool that I used. It was a good challenge because you had to make sure your lesson was set at the student’s level.

Here are some examples from Indigo O’Brien, Inez McLeod, Nadia Huang, Sebastian Mason, Orla Legena, and Roisin Crawford.

Mind and body incursion

On the 17 of November (aka last Thursday )a girl named Mary came in and took us to do mind and body related things because that's the ¾ integrated Subject as most ¾ parents would know, anyways back to the subject.

The “mind and body” activities involved, Multiple breathing activities and some yoga with  a couple stretches, my favourite was scales, But at the end of it we laid down of our back and relaxed, Mary gave us a story to imagine in our mind where we were on a isolated island and we found a crystal and when we woke up from our imagination we found a crystal on the end of our yoga mats, the crystals were glow in the dark crystals.

I personally think this was a really good idea and I also  think that this was a really good thing and we should do it again next year.

Mind and body activity

On the 17th of November we had a girl named Mary  come and teach the grade 3/4   how to be mindful and calm. We did an activity where I imagined  I was on a beach with nobody there other than me.

The  mind and body  activities involved multiple breathing activities and some yoga.  We learned some stretches like the emu pose  and the cobra. It was  really enjoyable and calming.

Project-Based Learning  - Global Citizenship

By Will O, Will T, Ilhan & Fatima

Over the past term and a half, we have studied global issues as part of our global citizenship project. We learnt all about solar power, girls' education, Indigenous literacy, energy poverty and global citizenship.

We were split into groups of around 5 people (most of which we weren’t friends with or didn’t know very well), this helped us with teamwork and helped us make new friends. At the end of all our work, we sold the shirts and badges with our logos on them at our PBL presentation and we raised over $1100 that we are donating to the Sanson community-owned bank in Central America because it will help rural people that need the money for their small business.

Solar power

Solar power is energy that comes from the sun. It is a renewable power source that is harnessed by solar panels. Solar panels are made from silicon which is commonly found in sand meaning that it is easy to get, except for the fact that it takes a while to remove the silicon from the sand. Solar power is clean, effective and well-priced, so we recommend more people get it.

Energy poverty

Energy poverty is a global issue that is very important because 13% of the population doesn’t have access to power. We focused on 2 main topics for energy poverty; energy poverty around the world and solar buddies. For energy poverty, we studied how people in poor countries had a lower chance to have access to electricity let alone clean power.

Girls education

Girls' education is very important in society because all people need education, not just boys. Boys and girls need to be equal, not one over the other. Girls in some countries still don't have the right to go to school which is a huge problem that we hope to fix because it affects almost half the population.

Indigenous Literacy

Indigenous literacy aims to help indigenous people speak their language and also, non-indigenous people learn about the history of indigenous people and the culture of the people who are the traditional custodians of this land. Indigenous people don’t often release books because they don’t think that many people will buy them, but this is a mistake, Indigenous books are needed more than English books because culture needs to be shared.

Global citizenship

We learnt what global citizenship is and what being a global citizen means, being a global citizen means caring for the whole world with your actions, along with caring for the small things around you. We worked mainly on what a child needs to thrive, which we believe is an education, parents or guardians, friends, good food and drink and a roof over your head, What do you think a child needs to thrive?

This project has helped all of us to learn of these horrible issues that trouble our planet, we have all learnt of these issues and we have all worked on them so now we will try our hardest to solve these problems. Now that you have learnt what we have, we hope that you will help us fix the global issues and in turn, help the world like a good global citizen would.

Coburg High and Moreland Primary Ride Initiative

As part of the Open Streets Initiative with Merri-Bek City Council, Moreland Primary School and Coburg High further strengthened the partnership between the two schools. On Wednesday 23rd November, Grade 6 students that will be attending Coburg High in 2023, participated in a ride to Coburg High with a number of Year 7 students.

Once at Coburg High students had a mini school tour as well as participating in bike activities and were shown the bike shed and the maintenance area.

It was a great experience for the Grade 6 students to understand the importance of road safety and road rules and further their knowledge on different safe routes that can be taken to get to school safely when riding.

Thanks to Miro, Will T, Will O, Fatima, Mariam, Jacob H, Hilary, Emma, Nicola, Jimmy and Guye for their efforts. Also thank you to Maria for helping out with the ride.
