Year 6 & Specialists

Year 6 News

It has been a jam-packed start to the year in Year 6!  The Year 6’s have settled well into their 2023 classrooms and have been getting to know their teachers and peers.

In Reading, we have been developing our understanding of a range of comprehension strategies, including inferencing, literal comprehension, as well as comparing the similarities and differences between different texts written by the same author.

When Writing, we have written narratives about our own chosen topics.  The focus within our narratives has been to include a range of figurative language (e.g., onomatopoeia, similes and metaphors, hyperboles and idioms) and follow the correct text structure.

In Maths, we have continued to explore number through using the four operations.  We have explicitly looked at multiplication, division and the order of operations.  We have also applied this understanding of the operations to support us with converting between units of measurement (length, mass and capacity).

Inquiry lessons have been our personal favourite as we have been exploring animal adaptations.  We have chosen an Australian animal of our choice and are working on creating dioramas to show their habitat and structural, physiological and behavioural adaptations for survival.  We will be presenting our hard work to our peers in the final week of Term 1.

SPECIALISTS

Senior PE

It has been an action packed Term in PE and Sport!  The senior school has been

developing and building on their Track and Field Athletic skills including Discus, Shot Put, Running, Hurdles, Relay and High Jump. This was in preparation for House Cross Country and House Athletics. Students in Years 3-6 took part in House Cross Country at Casey Fields on Wednesday 8th March.  Everyone had a great day!  The weather was kind to us, the atmosphere was awesome, the teamwork and sportsmanship was just amazing.  Well done to everyone that participated and gave it their best.  Congratulations to everyone that made the District Cross Country team, they will be competing on Wednesday 5th April at Casey Fields.

On Tuesday 28th of March, students in Years 5-6 participated in our House Athletics Day on our new oval!  It was a fun day, lots of participation and some great results.  It was great to see everyone cheering on their classmates, friends and House. Year 3-4 will participate in their rescheduled House Athletics Day on Tuesday the 4th of April.  The District team will be announced by the end of Term 1.

We have a lot to look forward to for Term 2 so stay tuned!

JUNIOR PE

FOUNDATION

Our foundation students have had a great start to their Physical Education and sport journey at Clyde PS.  Early in the term students were introduced to games involving the whistle- our students now know that in PE the whistle means ‘stop, look and listen’. Students then explored the fundamental motor skills of catching and the overarm throw using a variety of equipment such as bean bags, balls and vortexes.

Next came time to explore movement patterns associated with hoola hoops and the fundamental skills required to use skipping ropes.  We will revisit these skills many times throughout the year.

Term one has finished with learning to kick and dribble a soccer ball.  Students have loved kicking their soccer ball to a partner, kicking down as many cones as they can in soccer ‘ten pin bowling’ and kicking goals.

YEAR ONE

Our Year One students started the term revisiting the skills learnt in catching and overarm throwing.  They used a variety of equipment to engage in various activities such as using bean bags, balls and vortexes.

Year ones also took the opportunity to explore more advanced skills with hoola hoops and building their confidence with skipping ropes- with a focus on the jump and timing of our feet.

The remainder of the term has seen our year ones build their skills of basketball- in particular, controlling the single hand bounce and working in small teams.

YEAR TWO

Our Year Two students began the term refining the skills involved with their overarm throw and catch- with a focus on improving their accuracy.

Students were then involved in a unit of activities that focussed on the two handed strike where they were able to safely use the padded baseball bats to apply their skills to modified games.

To conclude the term, students have been actively practising their soccer skills in both kicking, dribbling, trapping and goal keeping, then applying these to a variety of games.

STEM

This term in STEM students have investigated materials. They have discovered that some materials are stronger than others and some are more water proof.  Students tested their knowledge of waterproof materials by making and floating boats.  Students in years 3-4 have been learning about states of matter.  They have had lots of fun experimenting with substances that do and do not dissolve, dancing sultanas and Ooblek.  Students in years 5-6 have been busy building models of volcanoes as they complete their ‘States of matter in volcanic environments’ project.

ART

We’ve had a fantastic start to the Art program!  Students have dived right into using the paints, blending and mixing colours while creating fabulous artworks inspired by well renowned artists.  Students have been learning about the elements of space, colour, value and shape and incorporating them into artworks that show depth and perspective.

Every day, students have made me smile with pride at the dedication, enthusiasm and imagination that they exhibit within their artworks.  I hope they are sharing with you at home the wonderful skills they have been learning.

MUSIC

This term, we are lucky to get ten more keyboards added to the music room.  Year 3-6 students enjoyed working in small groups, playing games to learn how to identify the keys on the keyboards and then using that knowledge to play small songs independently. Students in Year 1 and 2 have started to learn the Xylophone.  They worked with their partners or independently to play small  songs on the “Xylophone”.  Foundation students were happy to visit the Music room and to engage using some of the percussion instruments.  They started using banjo drums and boom whackers to create music.
