Grade 5/6

Poetry in the 5/6 Classrooms

This term, students have been exploring the art of poetry. In Literacy, we have been looking how authors use figurative language to enhance their writing to capture the readers attention. Students themselves have become poetry writers, creating many forms of poetry such as alliterations, rhyming, acrostic and haikus.

Read some of our students below.

Little Lilacs leaned in lovely lines,

In daisy rows and glowing pines.

Luscious flowers covered a field,

Yellow, pink or purple, the flower petals peeled.

Lily 5/6A - Alliteration/Rhyme

Shimmering frost dancing in the moonlight,

While the cuddly cat was held tight.

A family playing a country tune,

Winter is as cold as Neptune.

Marcus 5/6B - Rhyme

The sunset is nice

and the stars are shining bright

those balls of pure light!

Kaela 5/6A - Haiku

While I was reading,

I heard a noise from the book.

"What was that? My gosh!"

It said "I'm coming."

I told the librarian,

she said "you're crazy!"

I read her the quote,

she put me in detention,

for my craziness.

Maddi 5/6B - Haiku
