School Council Report

The school council met again on Wednesday night. Student leaders Woody and Ollie kicked things off with a thorough review of everything the student leadership team is focusing on. Funky Fridays are proving popular, while on more serious issues it was pleasing to hear students are taking an active role in improving sustainability at NPS by leading a school wide waste audit. I also hope the skit club gets up and running again and we are treated to some comedy gold at assembly.

Sonia then joined us remotely to present the NPS Reconciliation Action Plan. A lot of work has gone into the development of the RAP, and I would like to extend a big thank you to Sonia and all the parents, staff, and everyone else that has helped bring this together. The RAP recognizes the school’s commitment to reconciliation, and is guided by three key themes of Relationships, Respect and Opportunities. The school is committed to providing opportunities for First Nations students to celebrate their cultural identities, while also building relationships by bringing First Nations people into our classrooms so that students and staff can build and extend their knowledge and understanding of First Nations cultures. The school is also committed to raising awareness of current affairs and issues relevant to First Nations people and to that end will be providing resources and information sessions so the community can become more informed about the Uluru Statement From the Heart and the proposed First Nations Voice to Parliament.

In an exciting development that I’m sure will come as welcome news to many in the school community, school council agreed to investigate school holiday program providers, with an aim to offer families this service over the term three holidays and again in January.

Finally, we approved several incursions and excursions. The whole school can look forward to a visit from the DreamCity team, who will facilitate Science Week activities. The 2/3’s will be taking a tram to the Immigration Museum, while the F/1s are going to learn about Indigenous Perspectives during a visit to CERES.

School council will meet again on the 2nd of August.

Thanks,

Adam and the rest of the school council
