Science - Ms Foley

Our science classes have been abuzz with activity over the past few weeks, as students from Prep to six immerse themselves in a diverse range of Biological Science units. From exploring seasonal changes and how this affects our environment to investigating the transformative power of sudden geological events.

Our Prep students have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to test the shelters they designed to protect their beloved teddy bears and toys from the elements. After carefully considering different materials and weather conditions, the students put their designs to the test this week. They discovered that plastic was an effective barrier against the rain, but perhaps not the best choice for shielding themselves from the sun's rays. It was a valuable learning experience for all involved, as the students gained a deeper understanding of seasonal changes and how this affects our environment as well as how we can protect ourselves from the weather.

Our Year 1 and 2 students have been delving deeper into the concept of preserving Earth's precious resources, and exploring ways in which we can take better care of our planet. As part of this investigation, we embarked on a group project to make ice cream together. Through this activity, the students gained a deeper appreciation for the origins of the ingredients in their dessert, and brainstormed where these materials come from in nature. This was a valuable learning experience, as it helped the students understand the importance of taking care of our planet, and the impact that our actions can have on the environment.

Our Year 3 and 4 students have been delving into the fascinating topic of weathering, and its impact on the Earth's surface. As part of this unit, the students participated in an engaging, hands-on investigation where they physically weathered a piece of chalk. Through this activity, the students gained a deeper understanding of how natural landforms, such as mountains, are formed over millions of years through the process of weathering. It was an enlightening experience, and helped the students appreciate the immense power of nature and its ability to shape our planet over time.

Our Year 5/6 students have been exploring the big question of how sudden geological changes and extreme weather can impact the Earth's surface. As part of this investigation, the students engaged in a unique activity where they used Mars bars to simulate an earthquake. This hands-on experience enabled them to observe the changes that occur to the Earth's surface during an earthquake, and learn more about the concepts of transform and convergent boundaries. It was a valuable learning experience, and helped the students understand the powerful forces that shape our planet over time.

I am really proud of all the work our Trinity Scientists have achieved this term - I  hope everyone has a wonderful break with their families and I look forward to seeing everyone back in Term 3!
