Literacy

Our initial Lit classes have begun and we are all enjoying the learning that is taking place.

Each classroom will eventually have a word tree for students to continue their recognition of words already taught.

In Comprehension and fluency we have read used prediction to understand a simple text and participated in both choral (reading together) and echo (reading after) types of reading. We have also practiced recognising and using punctuation such as full stops, question and exclamation marks, commas, talking marks and ellipsis to assist our reading fluency. For grammar so far our focus has been around nouns, proper nouns and the pronouns of he, she, it, they, I, you, and we.

Home Reading

Please read with your child each night and record the book title in the home reading diary next to the date the book was completed. Diaries will be checked weekly. Please share books that you have at home or books borrowed from the school or local library and discuss the book with your child. We are encouraging children to engage in reading books of all types and to transfer knowledge taught at school into their reading at home.

Take home readers will be sent home shortly. A Compass post will explain how take home reading will work this year.

Writing

Writing memoirs continues and we have been focusing on using first person language, adding time words as well as the who, where and why of each memory.

Maths

Last week we started our learning on counting and place value.  We are using unifix and MAB to count collections. Collections range from 0 to 49 to above 100 and into the hundreds, depending on students’ needs.  They have been organising their unifix into towers of ten and then making hundreds out of 10 towers of ten.

Play Based Learning

Our focus is on identity, belonging and building classroom culture. These classroom culture skills and routines are transferable to all specialist classes within the school. Students have discussed these expectations and understand the need for respecting everyone’s right to teach and learn.  Activities included making puppets of themselves, working as a team to move cups and creating pictures showing belonging.
