Library News

From the Librarian
Whilst reading is the skill most associated with library use, we love to celebrate children’s writing, too. This term, the students in Mrs Crowe’s Reception/Year 1 class have been writing and producing a book of rhymes. The pictures provided here show the children with their individual pages and then, the next stage, Mrs Fergusson binding the pages to make a book. When further refinements, such as cover illustrations and a back-cover blurb, have been added, the class will donate the book to the Library so it can be shared with others. Watch this space!
And now, do have a look at the two book covers pictured here: Who Sank the Boat? and Mr McGee and the Perfect Nest by Pamela Allen. Do any of you remember them? Hint… Who Sank the Boat? was first published in 1982 so in our family it has been used by 3 generations!
Mrs Crowe, following the students’ enthusiasm, has contacted the author’s publisher who wrote to the author who said “Yes, I would love to hear from your students!” Pamela Allen now lives in New Zealand and corresponds via “snail mail”. We will give you an update on this when we can. We have about 30 books by Pamela Allen in our Library and they have touched many young readers’ lives.

Premier's Reading Challenge
We have had quite a number of completed forms come in just in these first few weeks of Term 2 and the students of Year 3 have now ALL completed the Challenge …. WELL DONE Year 3’s!!
Again this year, apart from the challenge of reading 12 books, there are a number of activities to take part in on the Premier’s Reading Challenge website:
* Kidspace and Teenspace and Rate-a-Read (parents, support your child in writing a book review for the chance in a monthly prize.)
* Students - post blogs, discussing your reading. Also remember the ‘like’ button attached to books on the lists, you can vote on books you like.
* Families - ‘Have your say’, send in recommendations to the PRC for books you would like to see on the booklists.
Lastly, keep those forms coming in, there are 3 1/2 months to go….and…..enjoy a good book.
