Sport Report
Friday 29th July – Intermediate (year 9/10) Netball Regional Finals
With momentum carrying the intermediate team through the Division day, our Year 9 & 10’s were ready for their next battle at NETs stadium Macleod. Our coaches Carmen Sjoblom and JJ Temaro rallied the team into gear with a solid warm up and team structures. Onto round 1 – we played Sacred Heart from Kyneton who took us by surprise with their skill in the first game. A late 2nd half fight back saw MGC down by 3 at ¾ time. However, it was Sacred heart who showed poise in the final quarter to defeat us by 5 goals. In the second round we played Gladstone Park and we finally played our best netball in a strong showing. Each quarter widened the gap in scores and MGC finished victors by 15 goals. It was left to the last round to determine if we could make it to the grand final by percentage as we played Diamond Valley. The first half of the game saw us neck-and-neck with the opposition. They played some strong tactics by tagging our best defenders out of the game in Hannah Scothern and Lucy Mansfield. It was the same at the other end with Eva Donnelly also getting some treatment from the GK. Unfortunately, we lost our way and were defeated with Diamond Valley winning our pool. Thanks our coaches Carmen and JJ for helping our Year 9 & 10’s on the day.
Thursday 4th August – NMR Senior + Intermediate Badminton at Darebin Community Sports Stadium
After months of training in the gym at lunchtimes our Intermediate and Senior badminton teams took to the regional finals. Both teams started very well in the opening rounds by winning the first set of games against our northern rivals. Both teams were then successful in winning the second and third round of games. As reported by Mrs. B and Niamh G the momentum was high as we made it through to the grand final at 2:00pm. Both teams were supper excited at the prospect of making it to the state finals. First up our Intermediate team unfortunately won one singles game out of four which meant that the team were left disappointed after strong performance across the entire day. Last up were the senior team and they did not disappoint with everyone pulling their weight and winning 4 games to 1 to book a state final birth the following week. Well done to all players including Genevieve Chia, Yumi Kurosawa, Ozge Duman, Anjulia Hope Fogarty, Natalie Tran and Shreya Nair in the intermediate team. Congratulations to Abbey Gao, Bernice Liaw, Gyumin Kim and Levina Goenawan in the senior team. An exciting week ahead!
Friday 5th August – Intermediate Sport Day
Basketball at Coburg basketball stadium
After a difficult week for team selection across 3 lunch time trainings – our strongest year 9 & 10 basketballers were ready for play at MSAC. We were fortunate enough to have 2 teams compete across the day. Our B team began the day against Princes Hill SC and had a strong contest on their hands going down 16-6. Our A team began the day against Uni High and put in a very strong performance to finish winners 29-14 in the opener. Princes Hill SC were no match for our A team in the second round who lost 56-5 in a dominant team performance by MGC. In the second round our B team finally got on the board with some great basketball defeating Uni High 19-10. At the end of games it was MGC A and Richmond who finished on top of their respective pools. This left one game standing between our A team and a regional finals birth. The first half started quite close, but it was our best users in Jaylyn Bautista and Leni Paten passing with ease to our shooters in Keira Lindemans. Geli karaka was instrumental in her rebounding efforts too. MGC A ended the first half with a score of 24-10. With some strong words from the coaches Miss. Wong, Miss. Kitching and Niamh G, the A team romped the 2nd half against Richmond coming up victors 53-14. Very impressive. Well done to whole team and onto Regional Finals in Term 4 on the 12th of October.
Girls/boys Table tennis at MGC
MGC hosted the year 9/10 table tennis day in our very own Multi-Purpose Room (MPR). The day started with our A team and B team playing against each other. And it was all for a bit of fun in the end with the A team winning first up. Our B team went on to play against Uni High next and this went down to the wire with our singles games ending at 2 all and the doubles to decide the winner. After a good start, it was Uni High that won and were off to the final against our A team. Our strongest players in Alex McCurry, Anjulia Hope-Fogarty, Ozge Duman, Meva Chadail, Abigail Tarsevych and Emily Chang were ultimately too good for Uni High in the end. Winning all 5 games to 0. An amazing team effort and they have booked a regional finals ticket in Term 4 on the 12th of October.
Monday 8th August – State Quarter Finals for Junior AFL at - Alfredton Recreation Reserve, Cuthbert’s Road, Alfredton Reserve (Ballarat)
On a cool morning our team of junior footballers made their way out to Ballarat with Mr. O, Mr. Monaghan and Mr. Rundell. The weather was scarily cold on the Bureau, however, it was clear skies and sun when we made it to Ballarat. The first final saw us come against a school from Bendigo in Catherine McAuley College. A strong outfit, our girls put up a great first quarter to lead by 7 points. Onto the 2nd and 3rd it was our opponents that really brought the pressure back on us and lead at the final change by 2 points. After a rev up at ¾ time, our coaches Esme Keen and Lily Ellis’ main message was “Do you want to play in the grand final? Then show us!”. And did our girls bring the heat! Kicking an early goal to wrestle the game back in our favour. It was like a pinball machine with our midfielders soccering the ball right to the line and Coco Maslin picked the ball up and banged it through. The ball went dangerously close to the oppositions goals and we fortunately were able to continually rebound it out. The siren finally went and we remained victors by 2 points. Incredible feeling in the air as stated by all players. We unfortunately lost Zara Lanigan to an ankle injury in the last quarter. Onto the grand final against Western Heights (Geelong).
The message was simple – play the way we play, shepherd, surge forward and score. Our players took this on board and Ava Anthanasopolous dominated the ruck, sending it straight to Coco Murrihy on several occasions who was able to seek out Lexi McCarthy multiple times. Lexi scored 3 first half goals to keep us in front by 5 goals at half time. Onto the last half, Mr. O, Mr. Monaghan, Mr. Rundell and all parents who came were equally impressed with how well the team played. Protecting each other, running defensively, setting up behind the ball and finishing with goals – it was A+ viewing and the final siren saw MGC win 53-14. Lexi McCarthy finished with a bag of 5 goals. A special mention to our defenders who were ruthless all day including Dannielle Barone, Ruby McMenomy and Indi Johnston. MGC will now play Rowville at the state grand final on August 25th at Highgate Reserve in Craigieburn.
Wednesday 10th August – State Finals for Senior Table Tennis at MSAC
An exciting day for our Senior table tennis team who represented the school at state finals as one of 8 schools remaining at securing the illusive title. Abbey Gao, Bernice Liaw, Levina Goenawan, Leah Tzouvanellis, JJ Temaro and Scarlett Brydon were ready battle. We played against St. Albans in the first round who were very strong. Abbey won the first match with ease and Bernice and Leah were up against tough opponents. Both going down 3 sets to 2 in the 5th. JJ had also had a challenging match in the 4th rubber going down as well. We had a fight back in the doubles winning one match, but unfortunately losing the last which meant St. Albans won. The continued with similar luck against Keysborough and Ringwood. While we didn’t win the day – it was a great experience at MSAC for our team who finished 6th in the state! Well done team.
Thursday 11th August – State Finals for Senior Badminton at MSAC
After a dominating performance at regional level our badminton team attended MSAC for a shot at the title. After training their hearts out - Abbey Gao, Bernice Liaw, Gyumin Kim and Levina Goenawan were up for the challenge. The day started in similar fashion to regionals with the team winning their early games. Strong showings by Abbey and Bernice who went back to back with state table tennis the day before, were out some silverware. Min and Levina were also in good form in the early rounds defeating Ballarat and Sale College 6-0 in the round. We finished second in our pool after a tough game against MacRob High School who were simply dominant. MGC were then into finals against Balwyn High who were equally as tough as our previous opponent. The Senior girls showed so much resilience and determination over the day but went down 0-6 in the final. MacRob High School won the state title and our team of champions finished 4th in the state. Well done to Abbey Gao, Bernice Liaw, Gyumin Kim and Levina Goenawan! Champion efforts – you should all be so proud. Thanks Mr. Egan for supervising for the day too.
Monday 15th August – Regional Year 8 Netball Finals at NETS Stadium Macleod
This week it was our Year 8 netballers who got their opportunity at regional level with their Year 10 coaches, Olivia Cavka and Lucy Mansfield. They travelled up to Macleod College with Mrs. B and Niamh G excited for what was ahead! Our team of 10 strong netballers played Aitken In the first game. 4 quarters of strong netball saw us defeat them quite convincingly 31-9. This was a solid performance by the team and our mid courters did an awesome job in Coco Murrihy, Tess Trigger and Lucy Crouch. We had a bye in the second round and played St. Helena for a chance at winning through to the grand finale. St. Helena were very well drilled as a side and played some tactics against our star defenders and shooters in Sophie and Sarah Elmes respectively. Holding them out as a they attempted to put their dominance on the game. Mikayla White did her best to hold up the defensive line and Flick Comerford in the shooting circle. Unfortunately, it was MGC going down to St. Helena by 12 goals in our final game. Plenty to take away from the day, but there is always next year! Good effort Year 8’s.
Wednesday 17th August - Regional finals for Year 7 Soccer at Darebin Int sports Centre
Yesterday, our Year 7 soccer team travelled to Thornbury for regional finals with their 5 strong year 8 coaches Isla, Tessa, Ruby, Grace and Indi. We played Gladstone Park in the first game and put on a strong performance winning 3 goals to 0. Our midfielders were once again extremely skillful in moving the ball to our strikers to score. We had a bye in the middle before the final game which allowed the team to catch their breath. With a strong game under our belt, the Year 7’s progressed to the grand final and played Edgar’s Creek. Nothing could separate either team until the final siren, where a penalty shootout was required to crown the region winner. It came down to which team had the best temperament. Unfortunately, the final goal for Edgars Creek left MGC heartbroken. Nevertheless, it was a fantastic team effort to get to the last kick. Everyone in the team can be proud of what they achieved. Thanks to Mrs. B and Niamh G for taking the team to Thornbury. It was also nice to see Miss. T with her new school at the competition!
