Principal Report, Year Level & OSHC News

From the Principal...

Principal for the day

Today I had the privilege of having Mia in Year 3 assist me for the day as Principal. Mia was the lucky winner of the recent Bright Nights Auction item.

Mia's day consisted of her own special name badge and desk in the Principal's office for the day. A personal tour of the school and all the classrooms where Mia was able to choose a class to spend some time in and assisting the class teacher. Mia also got to enjoy morning tea and lunch with me before a special VIP 'backstage pass' to the running of assembly. Mia also got to surprise her class with an extended recess, which everyone certainly enjoyed.

Thank you for all your help today Mia, and I hope you have enjoyed your day and learned a lot about what its like to be a Principal.

Lockdown

Today we held a whole school lockdown, which is part of our OHS requirements. The emergency drill went very smoothly, and we will action any feedback from staff wardens and students where improvements may be needed. Although drills can be daunting and cause anxiety to some students, it is a vital training tool for all involved so we are aware of the expectations and instructions to followed to help aid students to stay calm in the event of a real emergency. We strongly recommend that students partake in all drills. The next drill will either be an offsite evacuation or to an assembly area on the school site. Thank you to parents who waited patiently outside the school whilst the alarm sounded.

Parent Opinion Survey

Our annual Parent Opinion Survey is still open until Friday 16th September. We encourage all OPS families to complete the survey. Please see Compass for the survey links.

Enrolments for 2023 - Enrolments are due ASAP!

2023 Foundation enrolments are open. Enrolment forms can be collected at the Office or found on our website.  If you have a child turning 5 by April 30, 2023, please complete an enrolment form and bring in a copy of your child’s birth certificate and immunisation record and proof of residence in the school zone and we will process the enrolment.  It helps us enormously with planning, if we have a clear indication of enrolments as early as possible.

Families/Students not returning to OPS in 2023 (Foundation to Year 5)

If you know that your child/children will not be continuing at Ormond Primary School in 2023, please email ormond.ps@education.vic.gov.au as soon as possible.

Please include your child's final day at OPS, the name of the new school they will be attending and a forwarding address if applicable.

If your child is currently in Year 6 - this does not apply to you.

Sunsmart School

A reminder that we are a Sun Smart school and as such children are required to wear a school approved legionnaires or a wide brimmed hat from September to April. Students without hats will be asked to remain in the shade or potentially indoors. At OPS however, we ask that hats be worn all year round when participating in any outdoor activity (eg lunch times, sporting activities, excursions etc). They are also encouraged to apply sunscreen before school and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated during the day.  On extreme hot weather days, the school will be running a Sweat Day timetable where children stay inside. Hats can be purchased from the uniform shop (PSW) Primary School Wear on North Rd, Ormond.

New OPS Social Media platforms - COMING SOON!

We have had many busy bees (parents) working behind the scene to prepare new OPS Social Media Platforms. Our new social media pages are part of our evolving school community engagement strategy, and build on our refreshed website and student-led virtual school tour that we launched earlier this year. Stay tuned for our launch date to be announced soon as well as updated parent consent information that will require attention.

Final week of Term

As term 3 draws to an end I would like to thank all the staff and students for a very successful and wonderful term. There has been many fabulous events and achievements made by students, staff and parents that should be celebrated. The hard work by all in various forms does not go unnoticed and plays a huge part in the wonderful school community that we have.

On Friday, students can come to school in their favourite footy/sporting team colours to celebrate the end of term.

Parent Opinion Survey

We want our Parents, Caregivers & Guardians to tell us what they think!

The department is conducting a survey to find out what parents/caregivers/guardians think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour, and student engagement.

We encourage families to participate in this survey (which will take around 20 minutes). Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.

The Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 15 August to Friday 16 September. Please see your Compass Newsfeed to access the survey. Even though life is busy, we value your time in providing your feedback to our school.

Year 1 News

On Wednesday 7th September the Year 1 students went to the Collingwood Children’s Farm for a Paddock to Plate excursion. The students had the opportunity to look around the farm at the different animals and learn about all the different things we use the animals for. They saw calves, cows, sheep, 3 day old lambs, chickens, rosters, goats, pigs, peacocks, geese and more! The students also learnt about different plants on the farm and explored the market garden and all the fresh produce that was growing. They had the chance to plant their own sugar snap pea to take home and care for. We were very lucky to have a beautiful spring day out and thoroughly enjoyed the farm experience right next to the city!

Year 6 News

On Wednesday 31st August, the Year 6 students ventured into the CBD to visit the Immigration and Chinese Museums. They had an absolute blast and learnt about the many unique cultures that make up Australia. We look forward to sharing our new knowledge at our expo this Wednesday all about ‘Our Asian Neighbours’.

Our Asian Neighbours Expo

We are excited to invite Year 6 parents to our Geography expo, ‘Our Asian Neighbours’. The exhibition will be held in the hall from 2-3pm on Wednesday 14th September.

Please come during these times to celebrate our learning: Students have been working in teams to research an Asian country of their choice and have been investigating key demographics and making comparisons to life in Australia. Students have allocated roles within their teams, some of which involve bringing cultural food, costumes or special cultural items which showcase their countries uniqueness. As this is next Wednesday, please check in with your child about their role and any preparation support they may need. All parents will need to check in at that office before making their way to the hall for the above times. A 15-20min visit is all that is required should you be able to attend
